Celiac Disease Biopsy Explained: Part I Villous Atrophy

The diagnosis of celiac disease is confirmed by a characteristic abnormal appearance of the small intestine under the microscope. Flattening of the normal finger like projections called villi accompanied by signs of inflammation is taken to indicate damage or injury from the storage protein gluten in wheat and similar proteins in barley and rye. The small intestine biopsy has became the gold standard for establishing the diagnosis of Celiac disease or gluten sensitive enteropathy. Before 1960 gluten withdrawal followed by improvement and subsequent worsening upon rechallenge was the diagnostic criteria.

Early in the 1960’s through the 1970’s the small intestine was biopsied by having people swallow a small metal capsule that was attached to a suction tube. This was used to suction up tissue into the capsule before guillotining off some tissue once the capsule was confirmed to be in the small intestine by x-ray. Now the tissue is obtained by upper endoscopy, the passage of a lighted video scope through the mouth under sedation to the small intestine, where biopsies are obtained with cupped forceps.

Celiac disease biopsy: What does the pathologist look for under the microscope?

The small intestine normally has finger like projections called villi that give it a large surface area or contact area for absorption. The villi result in a shag carpet or terry cloth towel type appearance. Lining the outside surface of each villous are intestinal cells or enterocytes that secrete mucus and absorb fluids, nutrients, minerals like iron, and vitamins like B12. On the surface of the enterocytes are digestive enzymes like lactase that digest lactose or milk sugar. At the base of the villi are crypts or circular like collections of intestinal cells.

Celiac disease biopsy: What is villous atrophy?

Normally, villi are 3-5 times longer than the crypts are tall. However, intestinal injury can result in blunting, shortening (partial villous atrophy) or complete loss of the villi and flattening (villous atrophy) of the intestinal surface. The shag carpet will have bare spots or the terry cloth towel becomes like a tee shirt. The result is lack of absorption of nutrients and water resulting in weight loss, malnutrition, and diarrhea.

Celiac disease biopsy: What if the biopsy does not show atrophy or partial atrophy?

If the villi are at least 3 times as long as the crypts are tall then no flattening or blunting of the villi is present and celiac disease becomes more difficult for the pathologist to diagnose without the history or blood test results. However, an increased number of IEL’s (intra-epitheliel lymphocytes) in the setting of a positive specific blood test for celiac, symptoms and especially if supported by presence of DQ2 and/or DQ8 gene pattern, is highly suggestive of celiac disease. The difficulty comes when the blood tests for the specific tests are negative or not elevated but only the “non-specific” blood tests (anti-gliadin or AGA and anti-reticulin antibodies) are elevated. Also, some people with milder forms of celiac have no blood tests abnormal but have classic biopsy findings of celiac and are termed seronegative (blood test negative) celiacs.

Celiac disease biopsy: Can the biopsy be normal in celiac disease?

By definition, the biopsy has been considered the gold standard for diagnosing celiac. However, recent studies have shown that the biopsy can be normal in some people with celiac. How can this be? The pathologist reading the biopsy may interpret the biopsy as normal based on his or her bias about celiac disease, a failure to appreciate the significance of the presence of IEL’s, or misuse of the older standard of >40 IEL’s per 100. However, more importantly is the recent recognition that normal appearing biopsies may not be normal. Electron microscopy has revealed ultra-structural abnormalities in apparent normal biopsies of people confirmed to have celiac disease. Special stains, that include immune labeling of lymphocytes, have also confirmed increased numbers of certain types of specific lymphocytes in the villi of intestinal biopsies of people confirmed to have celiac. The bottom line is that a normal biopsy does not definitively exclude celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

Celiac diasease biopsy: What are other possible causes of biopsy changes that mimic celiac disease?

Cow’s milk protein sensitive enteropathy (CMSE), viral or bacterial infections, medications (especially aspirin like arthritis medications e.g. ibuprofen etc), autoimmune enteropathy, Helicobacter pylori infection (the stomach ulcer bacteria), AIDs, common variable immunodeficiency, and lymphoma of the intestine are all possible causes of small intestine changes that may mimic celiac. However, if you have classic celiac type symptoms, a positive celiac specific antibody (anti-endomysial antibody or tissue transglutaminase antibody) and a positive response to a gluten free diet then celiac is the likely cause. The likelihood is further increased if you carry one or both of the two major genes associated with celiac disease, DQ2 and/or DQ8. Normalization of celiac specific blood tests and the biopsy after a gluten free diet confirms the diagnosis of celiac disease.

However, lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and vitamins and supplements, are completely in your control. Bronchitis and Tonsillitis – Causes and diagnose

The condition called bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tree; tonsillitis is the inflammation of to tonsils localized on the posterior side of the mouth. Both diseases are caused mainly by bacteria or viruses, but can also be unleashed by polluting factors or different substances causing irritation. The most common cause of tonsillitis is still the bacteria Streptococcus with its preferred localization in the mouth and throat.

In bronchitis, the occurred inflammation affects the cills on the bronchial mucosa and lowers their movements so they cannot evacuate mucus and foreign particles no more. Also the mucus secretion is stimulated and the phenomenon of coughing appears during bronchitis. Triggers of bronchial inflammation are especially inhaled dust or pollutants, smoking, but also viral determinants such as Rhinoviruses, Adenoviruses, Influenza and Epstein-Barr.

Tonsils have an immune and evacuating function but viral or bacterial infection hinders the drainage leading to inflammation and pain. Most important infectious factors in tonsillitis are Streptococcus group A and viruses like Herpes simplex I, Adenovirus, Enterovirus, Epstein-Barr and the flu causing viruses Influenza and Parainfluenza.

The primer symptoms of bronchial inflammation are coughing with mucus expectoration, chest pains, dispneea (difficult breathing) and all signs of regular colds. Tonsillitis is characterized by symptoms like a sore throat and disfagia (pain while swallowing), fever, pain, nausea, anorexia and chills.

Most difficult to diagnose is bronchitis as it can easily be mistaken with asthma. Proper tests for diagnose are chest X-ray, listening breathing with the stethoscope, pulmonary function tests and collecting sputum for bacterial cultures.

Tonsillitis is diagnosed only by checking the swollen tonsils with a spatula and collecting a pharyngeal probe to determine if the infection is bacterial or viral. Bacterial infection will require antibiotics but viruses won’ respond to such treatment.

If not treated bronchitis can become chronic and increase the risk of lung cancer, contribute to apparition of asthma or make the pulmonary tract more vulnerable to infections. Complications of untreated tonsillitis might be obstruction of mouth and upper airways and an abscess that could spread in the entire body. Especially untreated Streptococcus causes heart, kidney, skin and liver damages.

Treating bronchitis requires painkillers like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen, assisted breathing in acute bronchitis and ant biotherapy with macrolides if Chlamydia or Mycoplasma are present.

Streptococcus in tonsillitis must be attacked parenteral Penicillin; in severe cases of more than six tonsillitis attacks per year surgery to remove the tonsils is indicated. Tonsillectomy is also necessary when the inflammation obstructs the throat.

The potential severe complications of long-term infection left untreated must imply more interest in healing the inflammation and treating the primer infection. Researches to find better and right cures are made all over the world.

Frankincense Essential Oil Proves to Be Anti-Cancerous

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri) trees were considered extremely valuable during ancient times and their location was often a matter of state secret. Egyptians used the incense to fumigate their homes, for ritual incense and the oil for cosmetics. It was used as a holy anointing oil and as a general cure-all for all diseases. It was also used to enhance meditation and elevate spiritual consciousness. History shows it was used for embalming and as a perfume AND formed an important part of the Sabbath day offering. Frankincense or olibanum was mentioned in the Scriptures over 50 times and is found in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Chronicles, Nehemiah, Song of Solomon, Isaiah, Matthew, and Revelations.

The actions of frankincense include anti-inflammatory, anti-tumoral, immune-stimulant, antidepressant and muscle relaxing. It stimulates the limbic system as well as the hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands. It is strongly anti-viral, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, antiseptic and expectorant oil. Frankincense has the ability to relax and revitalize at the same time.

Cancer Research Using Frankincense

There are a few researchers studying the effects of frankincense on various cancers with some degree of success. In vitro effects show inhibition or stimulation of cell proliferation depending on the concentration of frankincense oil in the growth media. A recent study conducted at the University of Oklahoma showed that frankincense kills bladder cancer cells without harming surrounding tissue.

Studies are showing frankincense to be a strong immune-stimulant with some claiming that frankincense has the ability to repair DNA. A Chinese study conducted in 2000 indicated that Boswellia has “anti-carcinogenic and anti-tumor activities.” These boswellic acids from frankincense inhibited “a variety of malignant cells” in people suffering from leukemia and brain tumors. The Cancer Research Institute of the University of Nevada treated cervical cancer with frankincense, in which “there was 72% inhibition and growth of non-cancerous cells.” Other studies have shown that boswellic acids from frankincense exert antiprolifertive activity toward a variety of malignant cells. Another study showed that boswellic acids are potent apoptotic agents to cancer cells and another one shows that Boswellic acids from frankincense gum exhibit potent cytotoxic activity against CNS tumors.

Why Hasn’t the General Public Heard about This?It sounds incredulous but the anti-cancerous effects of frankincense has been known for thousands of years. Does it work for everyone? No, but compared to the effects of chemotherapy, frankincense DOES show great promise now and in the future. Frankincense will never be promoted for the breakthrough that it is because there is no money to be made in its promotion. Frankincense is expensive in comparison to other therapeutic grade oils but “cheap” in comparison to drugs like chemotherapy.

Jock Itch or Genital Herpes?

Genital herpes and jock itch are rarely confused, but genital herpes in its early stages may be mistaken for jock itch since both conditions have similar symptoms. They are both uncomfortable, produce red, irritated skin and appear in the thighs, groin or genital area. However, they are usually quite easy to differentiate. This article is designed to help you avoid making the mix-up.

Jock itch is caused from a fungus called Trichophyton rubrum. It can grow anywhere on the body, but most often shows up in the warm, moist areas of the groin. Sweaty or tight-fitting clothing and direct contact with the fungus can lead to a case of jock itch. Jock itch may occur in both men and women, but mostly affects adult men. Like genital herpes, jock itch may be contagious and can be passed from one person to the next by skin-to-skin contact or contact with unwashed clothing.

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted virus. The virus may remain dormant for some time, but an outbreak will usually occur within 30 days of sexual contact. The first herpes outbreak is usually the most severe but not necessarily. Stages of a herpes infection are as follows: itchiness, a rash, stinging, burning, swelling, blistering, sores, crusts and a return to healthy skin with no scarring. These symptoms usually don’t last more than 3 weeks. Genital herpes symptoms may vary greatly and may consist of only a mild rash that disappears within 10 days and may return occasionally.

The confusion in self-diagnosing each condition occurs because both diseases affect the groin area. Both start with a red rash, itching and bumps on the skin. They are uncomfortable and can cause pain for several days. Jock itch usually causes red, raised, scaly patches that may blister and ooze. The patches are often redder around the outside with normal skin tone in the center. This may cause a red ring to appear. The skin may become abnormally dark or light.

Jock itch differs from genital herpes in that it usually doesn’t develop on the scrotum or penis. It tends to spread in the inner thigh area instead. However, a jock itch rash may also affect the genitals and areas around the anus, rectum, or vagina. The skin may crack, scale and be painful, but it usually won’t present open lesions like it would with genital herpes. Genital herpes doesn’t cause long-term infections. Healthy skin returns after 3 weeks, although slight change in skin color may result. Jock itch and genital herpes symptoms can both recur at any time. Jock itch can be cured after each episode but no cure or vaccine has been found for herpes yet.

The only sure way to tell which condition you have is to see a doctor. Doctors can usually recognize jock itch during a physical examination. But at times, they may decide to do a test. They will either perform a swab test if blisters are present or a skin lesion biopsy by scraping the skin. If all else fails, a blood test should remove any doubts.

To cure jock itch, a doctor will prescribe an anti-fungal cream or lotion to apply directly to the source of the fungal infection. Doctors can prescribe medication, or if you suffer from recurring fungal infections, over the counter medicine like Tinactin, Lotrimin and Micatin are available. The cream should be used for two weeks, and continued for several days after the rash is completely gone. If your jock itch doesn’t clear up or causes blisters, you should go to your doctor to have a physical examination.

Genital herpes can’t be cured, but its symptoms can be treated with an anti-viral medicine, which will help limit the duration of an outbreak.

Relief can be found for both conditions by checking with your doctor. Wear loose clothing, breathable cotton and quickly change out of sweaty clothes to prevent jock itch. Once you have contracted genital herpes, you can take measures to prevent outbreaks by eating a good diet, exercising and reducing your stress levels and taking antiviral treatment daily.

Scientifically Tested Olive Leaf Herb Is Known To Kill Every Virus And Germ Known To Man

What is the worst case scenario for the bird flu or just how bad could it get? A question I have always wanted the answer to. Well history is always the best teacher and we have an excellent historical teacher from 1918. The answer there is the bird flu of 1918, and that teacher is foreboding. Called the aquatic bird flu that actually started in China (sound familiar) then somehow got into Kansas not Europe. Isn’t that interesting? It started among US Cavalry horses then moved to American troopers assigned to those mounts, stationed in Kansas. These Cavalry soldiers were shipped to the battle fields of Europe to take part in the fighting. Some of those soldiers arrived infected with the virus. This flu circulated throughout the densely packed cities of Europe then made its way back to America and did the same there. In a little over a years time it had run its course and 40 to 50 million people were dead.

In 1918 the big cities like London had a million people. Today our mega cities have 10 plus million people and a very fast transport system. Any new bird flu virus can travel in infected people across the world in a matter of days.

Why can’t modern medicine help us?

Until the bird flu virus of today mutates to its human infecting form, no scientific steps can be taken to create a serum. Only then can science develop the serum and begin to make large batches. This takes considerable amounts of time and fertile chicken eggs and there are not many around. Under optimal conditions modern science takes at least 6 months, minimum. Remember I just said above, it only takes days to move the virus across the world. So even with all the pharmaceutical companies around the world creating this serum only a small part of the world’s population would be protected. I hate to make this sound worse, but the virus can also mutate into other human infecting forms and other serums must be developed.

The Herbal Solution to a Bird Flu Epidemic

You can see how bad it can get and how little modern medicine can do. There has really been little progress since 1918. So what can be done to protect yourself and your family? Here is the answer that has been around for ages. Olive leaf tincture is the answer to bird flu and all other germs and virus infections. But do not take my word for it, here is some of the history of this very powerful herb and what modern science found when they looked at it.

History of Olive Leaf as Herbal Medicine

I personally believe that God was referring to the olive tree in Ezekiel 47:12, God spoke of a tree: “The fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.”

The ancient Egyptians may have been the first to put the olive leaf to practical use. They regarded it as a symbol of heavenly power, and in keeping with that belief, they extracted its oil and used it to mummify their kings. The Egyptians and later cultures also found, and there is documentation, that the olive leaf was a great herbal medicine for the relief of fevers (sounds like viral infections to me).

The knowledge of the medicinal properties of the tree (Olea europaea) date back to the early 1800’s where it was used in liquid form as a very effective treatment for malarial infections. According to the 1854 Pharmaceutical Journal of Provincial Transactions, pages 353 and 354(a), the doctors at that time stated that the properties of the tree, Olea europaea, deserved more extensive investigation.

In the early 1900’s, a bitter compound was found in the leaves of certain olive trees called “Oleuropein.” This compound was determined to be part of the olive tree’s powerful disease resistant structure. In 1962, European researchers recorded that oleuropein had the ability to lower blood pressure in animals, increase blood flow in the coronary arteries, relieve arrhythmias and prevent intestinal muscle spasms. A Dutch researcher found the chemical responsible for olive leafs healing power was elenolic acid which has strong antiviral, bacterial and antiparasitic properties.

Modern Medicine Finds That Olive Leaf is a Powerful Medicine

In the late 60’s and early 70’s, The Upjohn Companies’ test studies were published by The American Society for Microbiology in regards to a new multifunctional monoterpene which they had isolated from various parts of the olive tree. The compound was called calcium elenolate, a crystalline salt form of elenolic acid. When they tested this compound it was found to be virucidal against all viruses for which it was tested. The compound acted effectively at low concentrations without any harmful influence on host cell mechanisms. It was also found to be extremely safe and nontoxic, even at high doses. While it worked extremely well in-vitro, it was unsuccessful in-vitro. When injected into the blood stream, the compound bound quickly to the blood serum protein and rendered itself ineffective. They were unable to overcome this problem and terminated their research. During this same period, other companies had interest in the compound and performed various tests, but also lost interest. Then in 1990, interest was renewed and the process of bringing the remarkable product Olive Leaf Extract to market began.

A safety study on calcium elenolate was laboratory tested with animals and published by The Upjohn Company in 1970. The study concluded that even in doses several hundred times higher than recommended, no toxic or other adverse side effects appeared..

Recent Australian studies show that liquid olive leaf extract made from fresh olive leaves has up to 40 times more antioxidants than even the very best extra virgin olive oils. This same fresh Olive Leaf Extract also has 5 times more antioxidant power than Vitamin C, 28 times more antioxidant power than Noni juices and 6 times more than Goji juices.

The Power of Olive Leaves

Effective against fever and helpful for nervous tension; great immune booster and viral/bacterial killer. Researchers credit a number of unique properties possessed by the olive leaf compound for the broad killing power: an ability to interfere with critical amino acid production essential for viruses, an ability to contain viral infection and/or spread by inactivating viruses or by preventing virus shedding, budding or assembly at the cell membrane, and the ability to directly penetrate infected cells and stop viral replication in the case of retroviruses. Die-Off Syndrome

There are no negative side effects with Olive leaf extract but it does have a healthy side effect called the Herxheimer or “Die-Off” effect. Here is what takes place during a die-off effect. Why Olive Leaf Tincture?

A good question, and the answer makes common sense. Tinctures are made from the ground herb combined with pure grain alcohol. Why Do I Snore? A Simple-To-Understand Guide To What Causes Snoring & How To Stop It For Good

Snoring is definitely no laughing matter. You may think its funny, even make jokes about it, but please, think again. Snoring is not only an annoying inconvenience for those sleeping within earshot, it can also be an indication of more deep-seated health issues. Snoring has been linked to marriage break-ups, engagements being called off, being socially black-listed when weekends away with friends are organized … even death.

Now this last complication is a big call I know. And I am not talking here about a frustrated sleeping partner finally flipping out and pulling the trigger. Instead I am referring to actually dying either in your sleep, or departing from this world as a direct result of your snoring.

Scary thought isn’t it, but it does occasionally happen. And unfortunately, the probability of this occurring actually affects more people than most of us would care to imagine. If someone does die as a result of their snoring, it’s usually due to complications that have arisen because they suffer from the respiratory disorder Obstructive Sleep Apnea (O.S.A.).

However luckily most snorers suffer from what is often referred to as ‘simple snoring’. They do not have the breathing disorder Sleep Apnea and this article primarily refers to this more common form of snoring. If you do feel that you may have O.S.A., always have it checked out by a healthcare professional because as mentioned, it can lead to serious health issues developing.

Now, a few snoring facts …

– 1 in every 3 Americans snore – maybe you sleep with one of them or in fact snore yourself?

– Once a snorer, always a snorer – unfortunately it’s a lifetime health issue

– Snoring usually becomes more entrenched and gets louder and louder as you age.

But there’s light at the end of the tunnel – with the correct dietary and lifestyle adaptations, snoring can usually be controlled and in many cases even stopped altogether.

Sounds too good to be true? Well read on, but first let’s look at the mechanics of why you snore.

Physiologically, your snoring is most likely to be the result of a partial obstruction of your airways at the back of your throat. This obstruction occurs because when you sleep your neck and throat muscles relax, which can lead to a narrowing of these airways so that your breathing becomes labored and noisy as your air intake is forced through a smaller opening.

And the end result? Your uvula and soft palate at the back of your throat then vibrate against your relaxed tongue, causing that all too familiar snoring sound. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Then the deeper you sleep, the more your respiratory muscles relax and your airways narrow even further so that to sustain normal breathing, the airflow becomes even more forceful and the louder you snore. Until of course your frustrated sleeping partner elbows you in the ribs to force you to turn over.

Now, the main causes of snoring can be summarized as follows:

Physiological causes:

– Poor muscle tone in the back of the tongue, the soft palate and throat

– Excessive bulkiness or thickness of the throat, neck tissue or tongue

– Enlarged adenoids or tonsils, especially in children

– A swollen or enlarged thyroid gland in the neck (known as a goiter)

– An under active thyroid (known as hypothyroidism)

– Obstructed upper respiratory tract, stuffy nose or clogged sinuses

– A structural abnormality, such as a deviated septum or cranial distortion

– Ineffective neural control of the mucus membranes in the head and neck

– Overweight and obesity, especially around the neck and upper abdomen

– Aging (which causes a general loss of muscle tone)

Lifestyle causes:

– Allergies to inhalants (eg dust), causing upper respiratory tract congestion

– Allergies or intolerance of certain foods (eg lactose in milk products)

– High carbohydrate diet, especially refined carbohydrates

– Colds, flu and other respiratory tract diseases (both viral and bacterial)

– Excessive use of decongestants (they dry up the nasal passages)

– Sleeping tablets and other relaxants (they relax the throat muscles too!)

– Alcohol (which both relaxes and dilates – ie swells – the throat muscles)

– Smoking (which inflames and swells the upper airways)

– Previous throat or oral surgery

– Missing a significant amount of teeth (changes the shape of the mouth)

Even if you can identify with some or many of these causes of your snoring, there is light at the end of the tunnel, so please don’t lose heart! For the majority of snorers, your problem CAN be brought under control and the cure to your snoring may well be as simple as making some environmental changes.

In essence, barring structural abnormalities, stopping your snoring in both the short and especially the long term often simply comes down to making appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes. And there is no permanent quick fix or wonder pill to prevent common snoring, so you can immediately stop searching for that one!

Instead for the common snorer, stopping or at least significantly reducing snoring is all about monitoring both:

1. The fuel that you put into your body (ie your food and drink)


2. The lifestyle that you lead.

Yes, from time to time you may come across some effective short term solution to stopping your snoring, but if you really want the long term solution – in other words, giving yourself half a chance of killing your snoring problem for good – then you will need to make appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes as well, or your dream of silent nights just won’t turn into reality.

Now I’m sorry to be blunt here, but fact is fact. There is just too much stop snoring hype, too many short term ‘solutions’ that allow your snoring to return with a vengeance as soon as you stop using them, too many silver bullets that don’t really offer much relief at all and not enough quality information about how to put a permanent end to your snoring.

Instead, if you are really serious about permanently stopping your snoring, take a good look at your diet and lifestyle choices first BEFORE you consider other treatment protocols. You will most likely save yourself a lot of time and money, apart from avoiding the frustration of trying product after product, only to find that the underlying problems that are causing your snoring in the first place are still there!

Akalize Or Die

As I continue my research for Natural Cancer Cures, I decided to review a wonderful book that was given to me by my friend about six years ago: “Alkalize or Die”. The author, Dr. Baroody, is quite accomplished in his education and studies, being a Chiropractor, a Naturopathic Doctor, as well as a Ph.D in Nutrition.

His premise for Alkalinity is based on the belief that all illnesses are caused by “too much tissue acid waste in the body!” For those of you who have been following my natural cancer cures research articles, you know that toxicity is the secondary cause of disease, but the primary cause of any disease is oxygen deficiency. However, that small discrepancy is not very important in this review of his most noteworthy and useful reference book, “ALKALIZE OR DIE”.

Though we can measure acidity in the bodily fluids, urine, saliva, and blood, there is no concrete way to evaluate and measure the body’s tissue acidity, since the fluids are constantly running through the cellular tissues, busy removing excess tissue acid wastes. According to Dr. Baroody, “waste acids that are not eliminated when they should be are reabsorbed from the colon into the liver, and put back into the general circulation where they deposit in the cellular tissues (that are most deficient in oxygen). His understanding is that it is these tissue residue re-deposits that determine sickness and health. This is where we differ in the concept of toxicity and how it occurs.

With my research and recent discovery of the importance of oxygen in curing cancer, and all other diseases, in general, I imagine that once the oxygen level declines to such a low state, that the toxins from the cells just stay at the cellular level, because the cells are unable to eliminate, even their own toxic wastes into the bloodstream. Consequently, the toxins remain stationary inside each cell and accumulate more and more. Because the area is oxygen-deficient, bacteria, viruses, parasites and other pathogens (along with their toxic wastes) are naturally attracted to the oxygen deficient cellular tissue areas. When critically abundant levels of toxins accumulate in any location, the body creates tumors (trash bags) as an attempt to isolate and confine the toxins to one place. However, I do think that the toxins in tumors eventually become a combination of both stationary and re-deposited toxins, as the oxygen deficiency becomes more critical, and the elimination organs become affected by those increased deficiencies. Nevertheless, his theory also assumes that the elimination organs simply malfunction (without explanation), rather than the cells in the cellular tissue initially malfunctioning, and not being able to perform their job of elimination of even their own toxic wastes into the blood. So essentially, the cells become “sick” first, and then the organs become sick.

While we can’t accurately measure our cellular tissue acidity with any measuring device, Dr. Baroody has ingeniously devised an ACID SYMPTOM CHECKLIST which uses actual illnesses and bodily discomforts as the “acidity” measuring device. You can use these lists to determine YOUR current level of acidity.

You can see from these lists that ANY bodily discomfort is a sign of acid toxic waste build-up in one or more parts of your body (caused by nutrient and oxygen deficiency)! These lists will help you pinpoint what tissue acid wastes are present, so that you can begin to alkalize yourself and rid these acids from your cellular tissue and eventually your entire body. The reward will be superior health, energy and strength! Ignoring these symptoms will most likely result in premature death! The choice is most definitely each one of ours to make! I am happy to say that I suffer from none of the symptoms on any of these lists, so I assume that my “alkaline reserve” is abundantly sufficient, and I will expect that reserve to increase with my recent change to an even stricter Vegetarian Diet!

Understanding Minerals

Minerals are extremely important in the alkaline/acid equation. Certain minerals in foods are “acid-binding” which means that in the body they bind acid-toxins and leave alkaline-forming residue in the urine. The “acid-binding” or “alkaline-forming” minerals are the following: calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium, and sodium. Foods or other eaten substances that contain theses minerals, usually leave an alkaline urine residue. Because of this, these foods are considered “alkaline-forming”.

Other minerals are alkaline-binding. This means that they bind the alkaline reserve minerals and leave and acid-forming residue in the urine. The alkaline-binding, or acid-forming minerals are the following: Bromine, Chlorine, Copper, Fluorine, Iodine, Phosphorous, Silicon, and Sulfur. Foods or other substances that contain these minerals usually yield an acid urine residue.

Because Dr. Baroody discovered that other factors besides diet (i.e. emotional, mental, and physical)) also caused changes in urine residue, he attached another component to the definition of alkaline-forming and acid-forming…namely – energy.

Definition: An alkaline-forming reaction refers to any chemical alteration in the body that produces an increased ability to energize the system (body) and leaves and alkaline-residue in the urine.

Definition: An acid-forming reaction refers to any chemical alteration in the body that produces a decreased ability to energize the system and leaves and acid residue in the urine.

Whether something is alkaline or acidic is determined by its pH(potential Hydrogen), which simply measures the number of hydroxyl(OH-) ions, which are negative and alkaline-forming as opposed to the amount of hydrogen (H+) ions that are positive and acid-forming. So, in short, pH measures how much the positive and negative ions counter-balance one another.

We are vibrating (energy) beings and the stronger the inner vibration, the healthier we are! Thus, it is the alkaline-forming reaction that produces an increased ability to supply that vibrating energy!

Dr. Baroody imagines the acid wastes in the body “attacking” our joints, tissues, organs, muscles, organs, and glands (without any explanation as to why): however, I imagine these various areas of the body becoming oxygen and/or nutrient-deficient first and because of the anaerobic nature of bacteria, viruses, pathogens and parasites, they are specifically “attracted” to these areas of the body and start to grow and multiply, causing various illnesses and discomforts wherever they conjugate. Because of these deficiencies within the cells, they don’t have the power or energy to get rid of their own wastes, much less rid the tissue area of the intruders or their toxic wastes. This scenario is the beginning of disease.

Regardless of this subtle difference in opinion concerning acid wastes “attacking” or being “attracted” to various parts of the body, the basic reality is that alkaline food and water are major contributors to optimum health!

Dr. Baroody suggests an easy method to remember the 80/20 Rule for maintaining an “alkaline reserve”. This is of utmost importance because when your alkaline reserve runs out, death occurs! Eat 80% of your daily food from the Alkaline Food list and no more than 20% from the Acid Food List. This proportion will guarantee the much necessary reserve. He provides a convenient Alkaline/Acidity Chart and assigns the relative alkaline and acid values to a large variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, cereals, condiments, beverages, meats, animal products, nuts, seeds, oils, sugars, and starches. I have very happily utilized this feature of the book for about 6 years! The doctor also provides a 3-week high Alkaline Menu Planner which is an easy way to start eating a high Alkaline Food Diet immediately.

I was very surprised to discover that all fruits are alkaline-forming EXCEPT blueberries, prunes, plums, and cranberries! According to the doctor’s charts, lemons and watermelons have the highest Alkaline-forming Value of all fruits (but you must remember to eat watermelon, and other melons, all by themselves on an empty stomach, or they will lose value, and most likely become acid-forming). In the Vegetable category, Parsley, Watercress, Seaweed, and Asparagus have the highest alkaline-forming values. For all you avid meat-eaters, THERE ARE NO MEATS that are Alkaline-Forming, so you must counter-balance your daily diet with PLENTY of alkaline-forming foods! For the Grains, the ONLY Alkaline-forming grains are Amaranth, Quinoa and Millet! I remember, years ago when I first read this book, I immediately went out and purchased all three grains and started preparing them exclusively for my morning cereal! I’m sure you will be surprised by some of the values, as I was, but it will definitely make you take notice of what you are eating and when! By the way, the doctor also provides a food-combing chart because if you combine the wrong foods together when you eat, you change their alkaline-forming ability, sometimes, in fact, they even become acid-forming, like the melons! Lots to learn here, but you will be much healthier for paying attention to everything that this doctor points out!

Dr. Baroody also covers many other important factors in detail besides food, that have direct effect on the alkalinity level in our bodies, like the level of Hydrochloric Acid, Water (I will be referencing the doctor’s findings on water in a future post, they are very enlightening!), Sunlight, Moonlight, Physical Trauma, Mental, Music, Art, and Prayer. This is an excellent book for learning how the body works with the very best natural cancer cure in the world… Organic alkaline foods! And to have as a wonderful reference for regaining and maintaining optimum health for the rest of your life!

Myelodysplastic Syndrome – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a group of blood disorders characterized by a dysfunctional bone marrow resulting in ineffective blood-cell production. Signs and symptoms include anemia, fatigue, fever, heart disease, bleeding from different parts of the body, reduced urine output and shock. MDS can be either primary with no known cause or secondary, which results from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, viral infection, exposure to chemicals or a genetic predisposition.

The Ayurvedic treatment of MDS is aimed at reducing symptoms, treating the basic pathology of the disease and improving the quality of life. Medicines which act on the dysfunctional bone marrow form the main stay of treatment for this condition. These include Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Trayodashang-Guggulu, Mahamanjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivasav, Lohasav, Guduchyadi-Qadha, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut, Suvarna-Parpati, Suvarna-Sutshekhar-Ras, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma. Medicines like Arjunarishta, Dashmoolarishta, Drakshasav, Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Shrung-Bhasma and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani are used to treat fatigue, heart disease and heart failure. Medicines like Sukshma-Triphala, Laxmi-Narayan-Ras and Maha-Sudarshan-Churna are used to treat fever.

A special type of medicated enema, known as ‘Tikta- Ksheer- Basti’, is used to treat disorders related to the bone marrow. Milk is boiled with medicines like Guduchi, Amalaki, Musta and Patol. Other medicines like Panch-Tikta-Ghrut are added to this milk, which is then given in the form of enema. Repeated courses of such enemas are given for several months. This Panchkarma procedure has special importance in the treatment of MDS. Ayurvedic medicines can be given in combination with modern treatment for MDS, such as packed-cell transfusions.

MDS can either run an acute or a chronic course and often progresses to blood cancer, with a potentially fatal outcome. All patients affected with MDS should therefore be under the regular care and supervision of a Hematologist.

Marine Phytoplankton Impacts Inflammation While Complementing Essential Fatty Acids

Anti-inflammatory medications are, without a doubt, one of the biggest selling medication classifications in the Western world. According to the June 17, 1999 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, doctors wrote more than 70 million prescriptions for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs or “NSAIDs.” On top of that, more than 30 billion over-the-counter NSAID tablets (aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, etc.) were sold in the United States in that year. But while these medications offer temporary relief for our everyday aches and pains, what exactly is their function? Are they healing or are they masking beneficial symptoms? Are their better alternatives? The answers to these questions may surprise you.

Inflammation can be a normal process designed to heal the body. Inflammation begins with the release of a fatty acid called arachidonic acid. Triggers for arachidonic acid release include chemical or environmental toxin exposure, bacterial or viral infection, or injury and trauma. Once released, arachidonic acid is converted to compounds called prostaglandins, specifically one called PGE2 which brings about the signs and symptoms of inflammation: redness, heat, swelling, and pain. Each of these symptoms, while uncomfortable, is a sign that the body is repairing itself and protecting itself from further injury.

NSAIDs and other anti-inflammatory medications stop the conversion of arachadonic acid to prostaglandins at various locations in the pathway. They can also have side effects on the body which include ulcers, intestinal bleeding, liver damage, kidney failure, headache, and more. Remember that the symptoms of inflammation indicate an attempt of the body to heal by increasing its metabolic processes. By suppressing the symptoms of inflammation, healing never actually occurs, the body can remain inflamed, and the cycle will begin again.

So how can we support the inflammation process, but reduce the symptoms that are so uncomfortable? One answer lies with essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids or EFAs are fats that come directly from our diet or from supplementation. They are called essential because our body cannot make them on its own and we must provide them through the diet. The most beneficial EFAs are the Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. The Omega 3 fatty acids are extremely powerful. In the body’s constant search for balance, it directly synthesizes an anti-inflammatory prostaglandin called PGE3 from Omega-3 fatty acids. Adequate amounts of PGE3 inhibit the inflammatory process and ensure that inflammation does not overwhelm the individual. In other words, omega-3 fatty acids decrease inflammation and bring balance to the body. This balance brings allows the body to heal and lessens uncomfortable inflammatory symptoms.

The best source of omega-3 fatty acids is cold-water fish like salmon, trout, halibut, sardines, and cod. These fish are rich in the omega-3 fatty acids. Another very beneficial source of EFAs is marine phytoplankton. Marine phytoplankton are microscopic single-celled plants which provide high levels of vitamins, minerals, and EFAs. They are the beginning of the food chain, the food for whales, and a great source of foundational nutrition. Genital Warts, The Deadly Type – How Genital Warts Look on the Penis and Vagina

Genital warts: Why is it when the mention of the word pops up that people with warts naturally think they are going to die? Is there a deadly type of genital wart? If you mean are they noted for killing people, then no is the answer to this question. However, depending on the disorder/disease in question if complications happen then it would be difficult for anyone to give a guarantee on the outcome.

What do genital warts look like? This is a good question to ask and one that tells me you or someone you know has spotted or felt something unusual around the vagina/ anus to give you reason for concern, and hopefully want to do something about.

As it goes for all health matters the earlier the problem is treated it betters the chances of a quick and easy cure. The longer a problem is allowed to be a problem then it may take stronger medication and time to make things better.

If you suspect genital warts are present and embarrassed to tell the doctor, then do not be. It is a common condition that doctors treat on a daily basis.

In medical terms genital warts are called “Condylomata acuminata” or “venereal warts.” and usually look like small fleshy growths or bumps on the skin. More on this below because warts can differ from what is considered usual?

Because venereal warts are a viral condition, meaning, not caused by bacteria, antibiotics may not treat the warts effectively.

The sexually transmitted infection is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Warts grow in clammy warm tissues of the vulva, vagina, and cervix in women.

In males the warts are likely found at the tip or on the shaft of the penis. Warts might surface around the anus also. Warts can happen in the mouth and throat if oral sex is included.

Genitals warts are indeed a part of our society, and we all need to be aware of this.

Awareness: Not all warts look the same

For example, some genital warts look like a raised bump or maybe a small irritable rash. While other types of warts look bigger and appear in the shape of a cauliflower. As a rule they look like small white or pink bumps. Some patients show raised growths, while others, flat. Some come across like eruptions, or red and severe rashes.

Genital warts got their name after those that develop on the hands.

Men with HPV virus see genital warts either on the scrotum, on the tip of the penis, the anus and maybe the urethra. Them located on the penis head typically feel smooth, but this alters for those around the anus which might feel rougher. Some warts are shiny and glisten. Warts can be hard to find especially if a single one is hiding behind pubic hair, and this is why a regular self examination is important.

Female genital warts look pretty much the same to those men have. The only difference is they commonly develop around the vagina because of it being moist. The warts to touch in this spot might feel like tiny gritty growths. They are not known for causing pain, but can feel itchy and uncomfortable. If warts site on the outer layers of the vagina, then it is vital for a gynecologist to take a look and make sure no other growths are on the inside of the cervix, or vagina. Particular virus types in women can possibly lead to cervical cancer. There is a strong connection between HPV types 16 and 18 and cervical cancer.


Do you smoke? Then stop because warts persist longer in smokers.

Do not treat genital warts with wart lotions created for those on the hands

Make an appointment with the doctor or medic at a genitourinary medicine clinic where they will also do tests for other types of infections.

The HPV virus cannot be cured completely, but the warts can be removed.

Be prepared for warts to return. 30% of people will after a few weeks or months get the warts back. Treatments do destroy the warts, but unfortunately cannot remove the virus from inside the skin.

Podophyllotoxin is a plant extract that comes in liquid or cream form. It is applied twice daily for 3 days, followed by a break of 4 days. The process is repeated until the warts have gone. Treatment can cause redness and a burning feeling, and should not be used by a pregnant woman.

Imiquimod is a second alternative if podophyllotoxin does not work. It is applied three times a week before going to bed. The ointment works by stimulating the bodys’ own immune system to get rid of the warts. It normally takes 8 weeks of treatment for women and men, 12, but it can be used for up to 4 months. Itching, redness and soreness often happen with this treatment.

A common practice to rid warts is called Cryotherapy. It includes freezing the warts with liquid nitrogen. How much liquid nitrogen would depend on the size of the warts? Providing there are no complications, healing takes between one to three weeks. Discomfort afterwards is tolerable and include

Mononucleosis and EPO – Is There a Connection?

With all this fuss about the use of EPO in cycling in recent years and how laboratorial inject able EPO was practically undetectable until very recently (2003), plus how the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) and other Anti-Doping labs worldwide are suspicious that athletes are freely using performance enhancing drugs namely EPO; some officials are starting to openly vent their frustrations with the shortcomings (underfunding) of the aforementioned agencies.

With recent reports of several athletes contracting mononucleosis, I became curious and I decided to make a search on the internet to see if there was a possibility of a connection between EPO and mononucleosis and I found this startling report (excerpt below).

Author: Paul Schick, MD, Emeritus Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University Medical College; Research Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine:

“Pure Red Cell Aplasia

  • Respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, primary atypical pneumonia, infectious mononucleosis, mumps, and viral hepatitis may trigger pure red cell aplasia.
  • Importantly, note that EPO-related appears to be a rare complication when one considers that approximately 3 million patients are treated with EPO worldwide. Nevertheless, maintain awareness of the possibility of this complication. In 2002, Casadevall et al recommended that patients receiving EPO should be tested for neutralizing anti-EPO antibodies as soon as possible after the onset of an unexplained anemia.
  • Darbepoetin alfa (Aranesp) has recently been introduced and has a different carbohydrate structure than endogenous EPO. Patients receiving this agent should be monitored closely.
  • Obviously, the administration of EPO for athletic performance should be avoided. ”

“- Medical side effects

EPO commonly “thickens” blood which causes additional circulatory strain as well as damming (clotting) in smaller blood vessels. EPO use is dangerous as it stresses elements in the circulation and quite often is sufficient to precipitate systemic failures that otherwise would function normally under natural levels of stress.”

“What are the side-effects of EPO misuse?

· While proper use of EPO has an enormous therapeutic benefit in the treatment of anaemia related to cancer or kidney disease, its misuse can lead to serious health risks for athletes who use this substance simply to gain a competitive edge. It is well known that EPO, by thickening the blood, leads to an increased risk of several deadly diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, and cerebral or pulmonary embolism. The misuse of recombinant human EPO may also lead to autoimmune diseases with serious health consequences.”

Does this mean, if you have mononucleosis that you have used EPO? No, it could be viral, but if you are an athlete, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) and other Anti-Doping labs worldwide will have their red flags waving for months!

With this information, I became concerned, because if there are any tennis players out there, champions, champions to be or not champions, before they even think about using EPO, they should be aware of the consequences.

Why risk your life for a medal, a cup or a few dollars more? Players and athletes, just say NO and stay away from EPO! Your health and your life is more important to all of us then if you win.

Swollen Taste Buds – Cause for Concern?

Most people have had swollen, irritated or painful taste buds at some point in their lives. Fortunately, in most cases this is not a serious problem and there is no need to seek medical attention. Simple home remedies can often help reduce the discomfort.

More serious causes of swollen taste buds include allergies, and some diseases such as yeast infection, geographic tongue, GERD and herpes infection. Yeast infections of the mouth sometimes occur after the use of antibiotic medications. This is because the antibiotic kills off the “good bacteria” in your gut and leads to an overgrowth of the bad stuff – yeast. Yogurt can help restore balance in your digestive tract.

Geographic tongue is a harmless condition and generally of little concern. The name describes how the tongue looks when it is discolored by inflammation – kind of like a “map” with some areas lighter than others. The cause is unknown, but it is thought to run in families and may be affected by stress and hormonal changes. People with Geographic tongue often have other allergies, asthma or eczema. Though the tongue looks abnormal, most people will have no other symptoms and not need treatment. This is not a contagious condition so you don’t need to worry about passing it on to other people through kissing.

By contrast, herpes is a contagious viral infection. Red, swollen sores can develop on the tongue. While there are antiviral medications that can help with outbreaks, there is no cure. Talk to a doctor if you suspect you have this infection.

Acid reflux is another health problem that can cause tongue problems. GERD, as it is also known, occurs when acid backs up from the stomach and irritates the throat and tongue. If you suspect that you have GERD, you should seek medical attention. Left untreated, it can actually lead to cancer of the esophagus.

However, the most common cause of swollen taste buds is something that you’ve eaten: eating foods that have irritated the tongue. Very hot (spicy foods) contain a chemical called capsaicin. This chemical is what gives spicy food its kick, but it irritates the tongue quite badly and over time can actually decrease your ability to taste food. Salty food such as chips will dry the tongue out and irritate the individual taste buds because of the crystalline structure of salt. Vinegar is another tongue irritant – so salt and vinegar chips are a double whammy! Other examples of foods that can cause this problem include: acidic fruits (such as lemons, limes or grapefruit), mustards, horseradish, wasabi, cinnamon, and ginger. If you know that you’ve eaten food that has irritated your tongue, then the best way to avoid getting swollen taste buds in the future is to simply not eat such foods. In just a few days, your tongue will start feeling much better.

For more immediate relief, try ice cubes. The cold helps to numb the tongue and will soothe the pain quickly. Similarly, ice cream or any other cold food will help ease the discomfort. If problems with your taste buds and tongue persist, you should check with your physician to make sure that a more serious problem is not the cause. However, in most cases, the tongue will heal itself within a few days and you’ll be feeling much better soon!

Summary: Swollen or inflamed taste buds sometimes alarm people, but most often the cause is not serious and the symptoms will go away on their own. Often a simple home remedy will help, but being aware of the more serious causes is important so that you know when to seek professional help.

AIDS Rash – Early Symptoms of HIV and Importance of Testing and Treatment

For some individuals, two to three weeks after a person has been exposed to AIDS they may see skin eruptions. Not all people will experience this and sometimes the rash appears much later. For some who develop it within a few weeks, it may subsequently disappear only to reappear in future. Remember that AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is a late stage of HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus but sometimes people incorrectly see these as identical. The Hiv infection may not lead to AIDS and by taking care of one’s immune system from the beginning you’ll have the best prognosis. Everyone’s body is different and has various challenges with the virus.

If you experience small dark bumps that are raised off the skin slightly that appears on your chest, back, face or neck, it can be a possible sign of this. When people have very light skin, the may be a deep red color or reddish brown hue. Remember that there are hundreds of rashes and that you shouldn’t reach conclusions without testing.

Other symptoms usually accompany the aids rash, such as aches and pains in the muscles, diarrhea, a fever, headache and thrush (Candida albicans yeast attacking the mouth). Not everyone though will have these additional symptoms.

In a week or two an aids rash generally goes away on its own. However if you have an underlying cause which is the virus, you still have the the HIV virus. Some find that drinking low sugar elderberry syrup is helpful because it exhibits antiviral qualities.

When a physician fails to determine the cause of any rash, they generally with prescribe corticosteroids. These block histamines and stop allergic responses. This can help inflammation but may not be the correct treatment for one’s rash depending on the underlying cause.

Because there are many various types of rashes, testing is the only way to know if you have the HIV virus. People can even get stress rashes just from worrying about a medical diagnosis. In certain cases where the rash is a circle that radiates outwards that’s a kind of ringworm fungus which is called Tinea Corporis. It’s very similar to the fungus that causes athlete’s feet, which is called Tinea Pedis. All of those are treated with antifungals. Rashes can be caused by fungus, yeast or bacterial infection such as impetigo or strep rash. There are also viral rashes such as herpes zoster which is shingles and due to the chicken pox virus one had in the past. Stress can also effect our bodies and we can get rashes from anxiety.

Don’t assume if you’ve been exposed to someone with HIV that you have the aids rash. If you do have a rash though, seek medical attention to get it diagnosed. Living in fear is very stressful and fortunately there are very effective measures now for treating the HIV virus enabling people to live long and productive lives.

Clinical Presentation: Every year throughout the world more than 5 million people-most of them kids younger than 1 year-die of acute infectious looseness of the bowels. Although death is really a uncommon outcome of infectious diarrhea within the United States, morbidity is substantial.

It is estimated that you will find more than 200 million episodes each year, resulting in 1.8 million hospitalizations at a price of $ 6 billion per year.
