Laser Skin Resurfacing Says Goodbye to Damaged and Wrinkled Skin

Laser skin resurfacing is a type of skin rejuvenation procedure that has both therapeutic and cosmetic benefits. Just as the name suggests, laser skin resurfacing makes use of a special laser that is used to eliminate skin that is damaged or wrinkled, treating the skin layer by layer.

What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a procedure that is most often used to remove fine lines and wrinkles that have appeared around the eyes and mouth. It is also successful at removing superficial wrinkles on the forehead and cheeks. Skin that has a weathered look can also be effectively treated with laser skin resurfacing. Any number of benign skin lesions can be lessened and eliminated all together thanks to the work of laser skin resurfacing.

This type of procedure can also help to reduce and / or soften the appearance of scars on the face (such as those caused from acne, diseases such as chicken pox, and scars due to traumatic events) and improve areas where there is uneven pigmentation. Skin that has been damaged due to the sun will respond well to this type of skin procedure as well.

It is important for anyone considering laser skin resurfacing to be aware of the fact that this procedure is not geared towards wrinkles that are deeply engrained in the skin's surface. The treatment may help these wrinkles somewhat, but it will not make eliminate them completely.

Medical Conditions that Benefit From This Procedure

There are some medical conditions that will show improvement after laser skin resurfacing is undertaken. These include:

-Chronic Actinic cheilitis
-Cutaneous Lesions
-Balanitis Xerotica obliterans
-Erythroplasia Of Queyrat
-Hailey-Hailey disease (benign familial pemphigus)
-Lupoid Cutaneous leishmaniasis
-Rhinophyma (Which is caused by an extreme case of acne rosacea)

The Consultation Stage for Laser Skin Surgery

It is essential that you explain to the plastic surgeon what skin improvement you are seeking when it comes to CO2 treatment (another name for laser skin resurfacing). The results will not be the same for everyone. The procedure can be performed on the entire face or for spot treatments. Some patients choose to have laser skin resurfacing done at the same time that they are having another form of surgery on their face, while others opt for singular treatment. This decision is up to you and is dependent on the problems you are experiencing with your skin.

The surgeon will review your medical history with you, as well as take a close look at your skin and the pigmentation of your face in order to decide if you would benefit from laser skin resurfacing. It is vital that you tell the doctor any pertinent information that is related to your skin, such as sun sensitivity, if you have ever had any viral skin infections, or what skin treatments you have had in the past six months (such as chemical peels , Accutane treatments or microdermabrasion).

Individuals who are presently suffering from skin inflammation due to acne are not good candidates for this type of procedure. People who have been using Accutane for a period of six months to a year would be better off considering other types of skin resurfacing procedures, such as peels and even then only until well after the treatment with that medicine has ended. Those who are prone to keloids should avoid laser skin resurfacing. People who have dark complexions, such as those that are olive in appearance, are more likely than people with lighter complexions to develop hyperpigmentation as a consequence of laser skin surgery.

Innovative Nature of Laser Skin Resurfacing

The laser used in CO2 treatments is a carbon dioxide laser that is considered to be an innovative, exciting advancement is cosmetic surgery. During the procedure, the water found in the top layer of the skin is heated, which prompts peeling when a gentle rubbing motion is applied to it. The skin will be red afterwards and crusting can take place if the patient does not keep the area moist by applying the proper dressings and ointment to the area.

It is essential for it by patient to a . Follow instructions from hwy Beverly Hills a cosmetic surgeon in order to allow directive healing to take place Following laser skin resurfacing. If you experience any problems afterwards, do not hesitate to get in touch with the office for assistance.

How Do You Get Bacterial Vaginosis?

A lot of women who suffer from bacterial vaginosis (BV) have no idea where they contracted it from. Many ponder the same question, “How do you get bacterial vaginosis?” Although BV is among the most common of bacterial infections of the vagina, there is still a lot of mystery that surrounds the condition. Despite what is still unknown by doctors, we do know that BV is definitely associated with an unbalance in the natural bacteria in the vagina, resulting in a BV infection when harmful bacteria increases. A lot of women associate vaginal infections with uncleanliness, but how do you get bacterial vaginosis if you keep yourself clean down there?

Women who engage in sexual activity with multiple partners are more prone to BV infection. Additionally, douching the vagina can cause BV to germinate. Studies have shown that women who have intrauterine devices (IUDs) are more likely to get BV, and the infection can also sprout if you use heavily perfumed soaps in the bath or shower. Women who are not sexually active can also be infected with BV.

So, now you may be wondering, how do you get bacterial vaginosis from having sex with men? Men can sometimes hold on to harmful bacteria in their urethra, which can at times go dormant and then infect their partner. In fact, doctors speculate that women and their partners can pass BV back and forth through sexual intercourse, re-infecting the woman. This may be one reason why so many women never permanently cure their BV infections and experience recurring symptoms.

How do you get bacterial vaginosis to stop recurring? One solution is that f you have bacterial vaginosis, you can ask your male partner to add live yogurt to his diet to help fight the bacteria he may be holding onto from sexual intercourse. It would also be a good idea to use a condom for a while during sexual intercourse to avoid passing the bacteria back and forth and being infected again. How do you get bacterial vaginosis from objects? You can’t. Women nor men can pick up the BV infection from toilet seats, sharing beds, or touching objects.

Head Lice, Nits, Body Louse, and Pubic Crabs – There is a Difference

As the human population grows, so too the infestations of parasitic bugs that thrive on the human body. In fact, contrary to what some believe, head lice, body louse and pubic crab infestations are not exchanged by other mammals but are species specific to humans, and humans only.

In other words, these critters cannot survive on any other mammal, with the exception of pubic crab lice that have been found on apes.

Let’s start with the terminology.

Louse is the singular form of lice, meaning one. Lice is the plural form for more than one. Nits is the name for the eggs of lice. These terms are often used interchangeably and can become confusing.

Now that you know the plural and singular forms let’s move right into the differences between

  • Head Lice
  • Body Lice
  • Pubic Crab Lice

Head Lice

Head lice or Pediculus humanus capitis, lives only on the scalp and lays its nits (eggs) on the hair of the head. They are small, flat wingless insects similar to look of fleas though their bodies are lighter in color. They do not fly or jump but crawl very quickly. They cannot survive away from the human host for more than a few hours and only their eggs on human hair.

They feed on human blood, but pose no health risk other than, in some cases, a perpetual itching which could lead to scalp inflammation or infection caused by scratching the area to relieve the irritation.

With the constant flow of international travel and immigration, head lice infestations have been found among every race, geographic location and class of people. It is, and may never have been a symptom of poor hygiene but simply an indication of close human contact.

The greatest percentage of head lice infestations appear in children from the ages of 3 and 12 with more cases being found in girls than boys. This may be due to girls having longer hair, sharing of brushes or playing together in closer proximity than boys.

Lice infestation requires treatment. They multiply quickly and will infest any and everyone that comes in contact with the host in no time at all. Detection and treatment is vital to protect against an outbreak at home, in school, and throughout the community.

Here’s What to Look For to Determine Head Lice Infestation:

Though late in the the infestation, the most obvious symptom is itching or a child complaining of feeling like “things are crawling on his head”. Grab a fine tooth comb and spread hair to look for those tiny flea like insects near the scalp. The lice themselves are quick and may be difficult to see so the next best indication that is easier to see, are the nits on the hair follicles.

These nits (eggs) will look like either brown, yellow, purple-ish tiny dots stuck to hair follicles close to the scalp. These are the unhatched eggs. Hatched eggs will look more like dandruff that will not come out of the hair. These eggs in incubation or hatched condition will not come out with simple brushing. The glue in which the lice attach these eggs is a lot like super glue and must be treated with an over the counter prescription or proven organic elimination product.

Many, from experience, will tell you that head lice evolve to survive. They become resistant to treatments, which often means it may take several attempts with different or repetitive treatments to eradicate the infestation.

It is for this reason there is such a wide variety of head lice treatment choices. Most are reputable, some are scams. There are chemical based products as well as powerfully effective organic options. Whatever treatment of choice – choose quickly and treat immediately.

Body Lice

Body Lice or Pediculius humanus corporis, is believed to be a sub species of head lice since they look very similar but target different parts of the body. While head lice lives in the hair, the habits of body lice are different in that they live and lay their eggs in bedding and/or clothing and only come out to feed.

Body lice are less common and are most found in deeply impoverished areas where nutrition and hygiene is wanting. Symptoms of body lice infestation include:

  • Severe itching in the area of infestation
  • Small, red and swollen bumps or welts
  • Tenderness felt, most often found around the base of the neck or torso where the body lice may be feeding

The treatment for and eradication of body lice requires thorough washing of all clothing, bedding and body. Standard laundry detergent with hot water setting and the hottest drying setting should do the trick. Wash and dry body with unused soap and a clean or new towel.

Everything must be washed that the victim of body lice has come in contact with. Try to discover the source of contact and apply the same thorough wash purging treatment to this person as well.

Pubic Crab Lice

Pubic crab lice or Pithirus pubis are really difficult to see since they are very tiny, rounded body with crab like leg parasites that attach themselves mostly to the pubic hair of the human body. In rare cases they can be found in a mustache or in armpit hair.

Crab Lice spread mostly through sexual intimacy and some times through the sharing of personal hygiene items such as a hair brush, towels or even clothing.

The indications of pubic lice infestations will often be; light to severe itching, macula or tiny, hard to see blue gray bumps on the skin, and skin breaks or redness and swelling indicating possible infection.

Treatment for pubic crab lice should include a doctor’s examination. Though an over the counter treatment may work, a prescribed topical treatment containing lindane may be the most effective. This is not recommended for children under 6 however, since it is a controlled substance with potential reactionary risks.

Can Yeast Infection Cream Really Help Your Hair Grow?

The active ingredients in yeast infection medications are usually miconazol nitrate (MN), trioconosol, or clotrimazole. Now, most people are using creams that contain miconazol nitrate (MN) as the active ingredient. I did find some cases on different forums of people using clotrimazole cream for growth, but didn’t find much about the use of trioconosol creams for hair growth. Those that have used the creams are calling it a miracle hair cream. Many have noticed their hair is growing faster. Some people experience an additional 1-2 inches per month as well as thicker hair. There are some cons however. Some people have mentioned that they notice increased shedding of the hair, have experienced headaches, and some scalp irritation.

Why yeast infection creams may work

Now for those of you who have done extensive research on hair loss… using an anti-fungal for hair growth won’t sound all that groundbreaking. As a matter of fact it is often recommended that an anti-fungal shampoo be added to your hair care regimen. Some of the popular recommendations include: Nizoral, Head & Shoulders, Selsun Blue, and T-Gel. Some dermatologists are even prescribing anti-fungal creams to those experiencing hair loss.

There are two reasons why an anti-fungal cream may help those suffering from hair loss. These creams have anti-fungal properties as well as anti-androgen properties. Let’s start with the anti-fungal properties. Hair loss can be caused by a number of different factors. One of them being fungal infections. One of the most well known fungal infection to cause hair loss is ringworm. Though, some health care practitioners believe that hair loss can also be caused by a chronic yeast (fungus) on the body and scalp also commonly called candida. If you browse through some different candida sites and forums and you’ll see countless people stating that they have noticed a link between their candida infections and hair loss.

Now, when most candida sufferers talk about their yeast problem, they are talking about an overgrowth of the yeast that is normally found in the intestines. It would be hard to imagine that using yeast infection cream on the scalp could somehow help the overgrowth of candida in the gut. No, but it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that if systemic (an all-over chronic infection) candida can cause hair loss, some yeast present on the scalp could certainly contribute to thinning over time. I won’t go into the mechanism of how candida can cause hair loss in this article but I will simply state that candida can infect the hair follicle, cause folliculitis which can contribute to thinning hair.

Some anti-fungals are known to also have anti-androgenic properties. Ketoconazole is one such anti-fungal. It is the active ingredient in a popular anti-dandruff shampoo, Nizoral, which has also gained some popularity in the hair loss world. There is an even a study that suggest that Nizoral might be as effective as minoxidil, the active ingredient in Rogaine, at increasing the thickness of an individual strand of hair.

For now, we can’t be sure whether yeast infection creams also have some anti-androgenic properties. What we do know is that many women (and men) have been using the creams to successfully thicken their hair and speed up growth. Now, keep in mind the side effects that were mentioned earlier.

If you’re intrigued but still not keen on applying yeast infection cream on your scalp, you may be happy to know that some hair loss sufferers are using dandruff shampoos with similar results. Dandruff has been shown to be caused, in part, to Malassezia yeast- a type of fungus. Dandruff shampoos contain different anti-fungal medications that target yeast, decrease dandruff, and as a side effect may also help your hair grow. Before you run out and grab just any dandruff shampoo, read through the below list of dandruff shampoos that may promote growth; some have a better reputation than others.

Head & Shoulders: A study has shown that the active ingredient, zinc pyrithione, in Head & Shoulders can modestly increase hair growth. In the study, the anti-fungal was compared to ketoconazole and piroctone olamine. Those who used the zinc pyrithione shampoo saw a decrease in hair shedding and an increase in the amount of hairs in the growth phase; but the other users in the study had more of an improvement with the ketoconazole and piroctone olamine shampoos. Additionally, many have commented on forums that they’ve had negative reaction to Head & Shoulders. This may or may not be from an allergic reaction to the zinc pyrithione. In any case, there are better options out there and Head & Shoulders would not be my first choice among this list of shampoos.

Nizoral: The active ingredient in Nizoral is ketoconazole. It is probably the most popular of shampoos in this list to be used specifically to help grow hair. Not many people complain of allergic reactions to the shampoo. In the study mentioned above, the ketoconazole shampoo outperformed the zinc pyrithione shampoo in decreasing the amount of shedding hair. If you have experienced hair loss, I would recommend adding Nizoral to your regimen to help slow any further shedding.

Selsun Blue: The active ingredient in this shampoo is zinc pyrithione, which we’ve already covered, and selenium sulfide. Selenium sulfide has been documented to cause hair loss. Obviously, this shampoo is not one that I would recommend trying if you are experiencing hair loss.

T-Gel Shampoo “Greasy Hair: This particular version of the shampoo contains piroctone olamine which has been shown to be even more effective than ketoconazole in increasing hair shaft diameter and about as effective in reducing hair shedding. Many users have also said that this shampoo is less drying than Nizoral. I would also recommend trying T-Gel, but only the version with piroctone olamine as the active ingredient. Other versions of the T-Gel shampoo have different active ingredients.

A Natural Alternative

Some of you may be more interested in a “natural” product. There are many herbs and oils that have anti-fungal properties. One natural alternative would be to apply emu oil to the scalp 2 to 3 times per week. Emu oil is a natural anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antibacterial.

So yes, you can use yeast infection and jock itch cream to help grow your hair. If you are hesitant, try Nizoral or T-Gel, they both can work. If you are looking for something natural, emu oil is a good option.

How to Spot Bad Mole?

How to spot malignant mole?

This morning you took a bath. The warm water feels so nice during the cold winter day. There was some funny skin itching on you back. You looked in the mirror, turned this way , that way. There is small mole on your back You remember this spot had been there for years, since childhood. Did this spot get that strange itching?

Recently you have heard the news that there are more than 50000 of new melanoma cases every year. This number grows 3% a year.

What is going on? Is this small spot on you back went out of control?

Several types of skin tumors exist. Many are slow growers. Many give rare metastasis. Simple removal cure majority of skin tumors.

Melanoma brings troubles big time.

Melanos = black, oma = tumor.

You can detect melanoma by self-exam. Skin cancers show themselves much easier than any other types of cancer.

In the same time you can cure melanoma by simple surgical resection. However, catch this tumor in early stage. Late stage metastasize. Surgeon can not cut off every metastasis in your body.

There are numerous sites dedicated to melanoma self-exam. Just type in the word “melanoma” into any search engine. Follow instructions.

Fair skin people have more chances of getting melanoma. However, dark skin people develop melanoma too.

Everybody has moles. Women even use moles to charm. How to find if your mole became dangerous?

Dangerous signs include ABCD:

A- asymmetry. Suspicious mole does not look like a round or oval blot. Often, early melanoma looks rather like a blot with an odd shape.

B- borders. Borders become irregular, uneven, fuzzy. The edges of the blots become notched.

C- color. Color of normal mole should be more or less homogenous. Change in color is very suspicious . There are shades of brown, black, tan, red. Mottled color is suspicious.

D- diameter. Change in diameter is suspicious too. Mole that is bigger than 6 mm is suspicious. Everybody compares 6 mm to a pencil eraser (though few people actually use it extensively). Just to get idea about the borderline size.

Besides ABCD there could be other signs of dangerous mole:

E – enlargement and elevation over the time

Also worrisome signs include easy bleeding and erythema (redness) around the mole.

Itching and pain in the side of mole make you suspicious as well.

History of melanoma in Family should also raise suspicions.

Some skin problems look like melanoma, but are actually harmless. Anyway, do not gamble with them. Even experienced physician can not always tell if the lesion is malignant or not. It is better to be safe then sorry and check the troubling changes soon.

Some rare types of melanoma exist. Because even obvious melanomas are not always diagnosed on time, the unusual types becomes much more deadlier. Often doctor sees them too late.

Melanoma under the nails. Melanoma of mucous membranes. (Mouth, nose or guts) Amelanotic melanoma – this one is not even colored.

The treatment will be excision with margins and biopsy, but most important of course is to catch melanoma Know that the treatment depends on the thickness of the tumor and the presence of distant metastasis.

Surgeon or dermatologist cuts off the melanoma. Then, Pathologist (doctor specializing in lab diagnostics) looks the sample under microscope.

He classifies the tumor. The grade of the tumor gives the clue to the chances of your survival.

There are several classifications

Breslow classification measure the penetration of the lesion into skin by millimeters. Know that > 0.75 mm is already dangerous, but > 4 mm is wacking.

What is 4 mm. It is nothing. Right? Take a ruler and check how 1 mm looks and how 4 mm looks.

So this is why it is important to catch melanoma early.

There is also Clarks classification that measures penetration of the melanoma into the skin and other layers.

TNM classification standardizes the grading.

You can not know the grade unless you excise and measure the melanoma penetration under microscope. It is not a do-it-yourself project. Surgeon and pathologist will do it.

The time of evolvement 1-2 years.

The frequency of melanoma is increasing. It might be because of more people get sun damage. Also other reasons may play role.

Treatment of melanoma includes surgical removal, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy.

Can You Cause Yourself an Anxiety Attack on Purpose? Help With Handling and Stopping Anxiety Attacks

Learning to seek self understanding and using daily auto-suggestion, ‘affirmations’ to help you in handling and stopping anxiety attacks actually works. Consider this with a grain of salt but please, consider this. Can you cause yourself an anxiety attack on purpose? You must think that I am crazy but I tried this once and it really helped. There are a number of activities that are available to you which will help you to handle anxiety or panic attacks. You will need to find the ones that are right for you.

In my experience, there are many possibilities that are overlooked due to negative first impressions. My first impression of the idea to purposefully cause an anxiety attack was pretty much what you would expect. ‘That its just crazy.’ It was really not that easy. Plus, what I learned from the experience was immensely useful and particularly enlightening.

I learned so much about myself. Things that I would have never even considered had I not tried it. If you have ever had an anxiety or panic attack then you know you would pretty much do almost anything to avoid another attack. It was from this very notion that I came up with the idea. It was a lot like the old ‘Face your fears’ kind of mentality.

I really hate being afraid. After my second attack I realized that the first one was not a fluke. So, instead of dreading in anticipation of the next one to come to me; I made the firm decision to face it on my terms. To try and cause myself a kind of controlled attack. It is not so easy. It was also kind of ridiculous but I was determined to beat this problem one way or another.

Self understanding can truly do wonders for just about anything that bothers you. You know yourself best, with very few exceptions. You will need to make changes to your personality and really try, do not just go through the motions. You will only be cheating yourself. Alright, here goes nothing.

Auto-suggestion is really just a better term for describing Daily Affirmations. Okay, this is why earlier I mentioned that many great possibilities are overlooked due to bad first impressions. This really helped me and I believe it can help anyone in most any situation. You are going to need to envision a person that is confident and decisive. Then you will want to become like that person.

So here is where this all comes together. The number one thing that most people who suffer from anxiety or panic symptoms do is perpetually observe their life in expectation of another attack. This is in its own way an extremely powerful auto-suggestion.

If you believe that you are going to have another attack then you will. Worrying about having another anxiety or panic attack leads to more anxious thoughts and feelings. This only increases your potential for another meltdown.

Now, when you do have an anxiety or panic attack you are going to need a plan in place. Know what you are going to say and do before the next one comes. You can use this one but its best to create your own. It can be similar. Write it down on a piece of paper and keep it with you at all times. Once it begins, you begin with your statements.

” This is only an attack. I have had these before. It will pass and I will live on.” It is important that you just accept it. Trying to manhandle the attack usually makes them much more intense. Slow your breathing and say out loud; “I have had these attacks before and they have never killed me. They cannot ever kill me because I am stronger than they are and everything will be fine.” Say this again, “Its going to be okay, Its okay, its okay. The panic is fading away like it always does. It will pass.”

That was what I kept telling myself until I found that I was handling and stopping anxiety attacks as they came. Eventually, like anything on your first try, you get better with practice. And with practice you get more control. Once you achieve some control, there comes confidence. Confidence is the reward you get from this accomplishment. It is an incredible and very liberating feeling.

Even for struggling against everyday stress these skills are excellent with helping to settle anxiousness and ease emotional discomfort.

Once you begin to feel the attack fading, picture that confident person. See yourself becoming that person. You absolutely can alter your own behavior through creative visualization and auto-suggestion(Daily Affirmations) if you are persistent. You must say your personalized auto-suggestions out-loud every morning while looking in the mirror. Put Saturday Night Live out of your mind unless it helps you during an attack.

If you are consistent and believe when you do these things, you will get results. These skills combined with your best efforts will help you in handling and stopping anxiety attacks. They will eventually become second nature. There is a lot more but this is a bit long winded. Keep your confidence up, build on top of it everyday, and you will get stronger than your fears.

Syphilis – A Bacterial Infection Called the Great Imitator

Syphilis or The Great Imitator is caused by a bacteria called Treponeum palladium. T. palladium belongs to a group of bacteria that are cork-screw shaped and are referred to as spirochetes. Other bacteria in this group cause Lyme disease, Relapsing fever and Leptospirosis. They all have a three phase life cycle like Syphilis.

Syphilis is acquired through contact with infected mucus membranes. Mucus membranes that can be infected on our body are the mouth and lips, vagina, penis and rectum. The eye can be infected also and for many years when syphilis was a bigger problem all newborns were treated with silver nitrate in each eye to prevent infection. Therefore, Syphilis can be acquired through unprotected oral, vaginal and rectal sex and during birth if the mother has an active infection.

Syphilis can not be acquired through shaking hands, or from door knobs, swimming pools, shared clothing or toilet seats. To become infected your mucus membrane must contact an infected sore on another persons mucus membrane.

Because the mucus membrane ulcers are painless the infected individual can ignore them. A surprising number of people do just that. If the ulcers are left untreated they will resolve in 3-6 weeks. The incubation period from exposure until an ulcer appears is 10-90 days but three weeks is more common.

If the first or primary phase is not adequately treated, then a second phase will begin while the ulcers are healing or several weeks after they are healed. The second phase begins with a rash. The rash my be quite noticeable or very light but will appear on the palms and soles. Rashes on the palms and soles are rare and usually a tip to something unusual. In addition to rash, the second phase of Syphilis can be associated with fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and may appear to be another illness. Diffuse fungal infection can appear like this and often the infected person is carrying a skin fungus also. The picture can be confusing and if the person is not very honest about their sexual behavior can take some time and various tests to make a diagnosis.

Syphilis is diagnosed with a blood test called and RPR or and STS. It is very accurate. Treatment is by injectable antibiotics. Depending on the phase and duration of the infection this could be a single dose or multiple doses over a period of time.

Pneumonia in Babies and Children

Pneumonia is a disease of parenchymal tissue inflammation in the lungs. This disease is a severe infection that often occurs in infants and children. In Europe and North America the incidence reaches 34-40 cases per 1000 children per year.

When confirming diagnosis of pneumonia, a doctor must decide it based on the complete anamnesis (interview with the patient) and a physical examination. Sometimes he needs to do a chest x-ray and laboratory tests. In children, age is an important factor in diagnosis. Pneumonia in neonates (newborn babies) aged less than three weeks is usually transmitted from the mother at birth. Common causes are Escherichia coli, Streptococcus group B, and Listeria monocytogenes. At the age of 3 weeks to 3 months the main cause of bacterial pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumoniae and viruses. Common causes of pneumonia at age 4 months to 5 years is a kind of virus named respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms that led to the diagnosis of pneumonia in children are fever, cyanosis (bluish, especially on the lips), and more from one of the symptoms of respiratory distress, they are: rapid breathing (tachypnea), cough, nose flaring, and retracted chest wall. Moreover, there is an additional voice in breathing. If the child is able to communicate / talk, he / she will complain of shortness of breath.

At the time of examination your doctor will ask you some important things, namely the age of the child, immunization status (had been immunized or not), a history of lodging in the hospital, the estimated source of infection, the drug that has been used. This is very important to confirm the diagnosis and determine the appropriate therapy.

Pneumonia should be suspected in children less than 2 years if there is any sign of tachypnea. Based on WHO criterion, it is called a tachypnea if breathing is more than 60 times per minute in infants less than 2 months, more than 50 times per minute in infants 2-12 months, more than 40 times per minute at 1-5 year olds, and more than 30 times per minute in children over 5 years. The calculation must be performed precisely in one minute.

Additional Examination

In most children, laboratory tests to determine the cause are not really necessary. Examination is required if there are severe symptoms, a hospitalised patient, or if there is a complication with other diseases.

Chest X-ray is not a routine examination. Indications of this examination are dubious physical examination, a long term pneumonia (not healed), unresponsive to antibiotic treatment, and possible complications such as pleural effusion (fluid in the pleural cavity, layers that wraps the lungs).

Therapy selection decisions will be based on the age of the child, clinical findings, and epidemiological factors. The use of antibiotics is essential in management of bacterial pneumonia. In certain circumstances there will be required a hospitalization.

Infants less than 3 weeks with signs of respiratory distress should be referred to the hospital, with the assumption that the cause is bacterial, unless it was proved the existence of other causes. Blood cultures, urine and cerebrospinal fluid (brain fluid) should be done. Therapy using ampicillin and gentamycin should be started immediately.

Infants aged 3 weeks to 3 months suspected bacterial pneumonia are also require special attention, especially if there is fever, tachypnea, or looking very weak (toxic). This situation may also require hospitalization. Initial therapy begins with cefuroxime or cefotaxime. Other examinations needed are blood culture, urinalysis, and cerebrospinal fluid test; complete blood examination with leukocytes count; and examination of the chest image. After stabilized, treatment can be replaced with oral antibiotics for 10 days.

In patients aged 4 months to 5 years of hospitalization is required if there are signs of hypoxia, or respiration more than 70 times per minute. Other indication of reference are hard / shortness of breath, snoring breath, feeding difficulty, and less supervision of the family. Virus is the major cause of pneumonia in this age group. Another common cause is bacterial pneumonia. Thus, the empirical antibiotic treatment in this age group can also be done. In this group of age, diseases is usually preceded by coughing and colds. Empirical therapy is usually performed using amoxicillin and initial therapy with a single dose of ceftriaxone. Hospitalized patients treated with cefuroxime or cefotaxime. If the child is stable and has no more fever, it can be followed by oral therapy and can be discharged.

In older children (5 years and above), the significant cause of pneumonia is streptococcus. The must be referred to the hospital if there are signs of hypoxia, cyanosis (bluish), respiration more than 50 times per minute, difficult breathing (shortness of breath), and less supervision from the family. The therapy will be cefuroxime or cefotaxime. If stabilized, it can be replaced with oral therapy and can be discharged.

Immunization of infants has been shown to reduce the risk of outbreak of pneumonia. Vaccination associated to this disease are Measles, HiB (Haemophillus influenza B), influenza and varicella (chicken pox).

This disease is an air-borne disease, which is transmitted through the air. Wearing masks while catching a common cold or flu will reduce the possibility of transmission of this disease. Separating a sick child in other room, will also reduce the risk of transmission.

The Pleasures of the South First Street Area in Austin Texas

The South First Street area has become a vibrant community lately, especially for pedestrians and bicyclists, since it is so densely packed with new establishments and businesses. The area is very unique and quirky; many of the businesses cater to the music industry and other artistic types.

There are a number of interesting clubs and restaurants as well, most of which offer live music on a regular basis. Two such venues are Jovita's and Freddie's Place, both delightful locations with shady trees with well known as well as new musical acts which usually perform early in the evening, to the satisfaction of families with children and the slightly older crowd that prefers to be back home at a reasonable hour.

Jovita's has had a number of very well known local acts play the spot recently, including the Marshall Ford Swing Band and the Cornell Hurd Band. The crowd is usually dancing to the catchy tunes, and it's worth the visit just to watch the boot-scooting and vintage clothing worn by many of the dancers, most of which are early to middle aged.

Freddie's has an outdoor stage under the trees, and patrons can have a full meal, while accompanied by their dogs (which are allowed on the patio area), or just sit up front with a frosty drink and listen to the musical acts, many of which are newcomers but very enjoyable and professional. Both of these fine eateries are on the east side of 1st just north of Live Oak and Mary Street. Bouldin Creek meanders through the neighborhood too, presenting a lovely and peaceful sight.

Traveling south, one gets to La Reyna and La Mexicana, a well-known tex-mex joint and Mexican food bakery, respectively, and both have great food and other products as well, including jewelry at La Mexicana as well as convenience store fare. Across the street, very interesting vintage clothing can be found at Flashback, which is currently having a clearance sale and all of the items are very reasonably priced. Amelia's and New Bohemia are also vintage and retro shops, a few blocks south on the east side of 1st. Adjacent to Amelia's, End of an Ear can be found, with various types of music on CD, record, tape, etc., and occasionally live music as well.

Just north of End of an Ear and its small strip center, Sugar Mama's offers cupcakes and other bakery items and sweets for the hungry strollers, and their confections are out of this world.Another vintage clothing and curios shop called Secret Oktober is a few doors down from Sugar Mama's too. There are also numerous coffee shops, including Bouldin, Once Over, and Somnio's, and all three have a laid back atmosphere and outdoor tables under the trees.

Farther north on 1st, but within walking distance, is an Austin legend, El Mercado, which offers a varied Mexican Food menu and has been in different locations over the years, with this site being in operation for almost ten years itself. Another great Mexican food spot, Polvo's, is a few blocks down, just south of the intersection of 1st and Mary on the west side of street, and their food is outstanding as are their drinks, especially the margaritas.

One of the most interesting locations is the South First Trailer Park Eatery, which is a large lot on which various food vendors operate out of airstream trailers and stands, with the emphasis on hand held food such as wraps, burritos, and deserts, also popcorn . This site also offers free movies on a regular basis, most of which are family oriented, and can be watched under the stars with one's own refreshments, which are allowed due to the BYOB policy. This week, the Back to the Future series has been shown, to the sure approval of the neighborhood kids and kids at heart.

There are many old yet restored homes in the area, and they are reasonably priced, many being fixer-uppers. Those near the creek are especially appealing, and many are already in perfect shape, ready to move in. But the real estate prices in the area reflect the appeal of the area and far outpace the average prices in the Austin real estate market. For new residents who prefer not to cook, the Soup Peddler offers delivery of different homemade, gourmet soups on a daily basis, and deliver on bicycle to neighborhood patrons, and has received rave reviews from diners.

The Origin of Stress and the Benefits of Meditation

Psychologists tell us that it is not outward conditions of over-stimulation alone that threaten us; it is our perception of these conditions that has even greater impact. Psychoneuro-immunologist Dr. Myrin Borysenko gave the following definition of stress at the 1992 Mind / Body Fitness Conference held in Santa Fe, New Mexico:

"Stress is the perception of a threat and the perception of one's inability to cope with that threat."

The first thing we see in this definition is the importance of perception. Stress is not some force "out there" beyond our control. It is the result of the way we are looking at things. It is the product of past conditioning, which acts as a thick, uneven, colored lens skewing and distorting our vision.

Perception is something that we can modify by re-grinding the lens through which we see. Therefore, stress is something we can control. We can change how stressors affect us. To change our lives we must first change our perception of what is possible.

As a test for the importance of perception, recall a time when you learned a new word. Immediately you began to hear this word everywhere. It was as if this word did not exist until you learned its meaning. Once known, this word appeared all around you. Was it not there before? The reality was there, you just did not have the lens through which to see it. Language, perception, and reality are interwoven. As an example of this, in qigong meditation, we learn the language of qi, of subtle energy flow, and learn how to positively influence the flow of qi to reduce stress and increase our health and well-being.

The next key to the definition of stress is that it has two parts. The first part relates to the power of a threat and the second relates to our own abilities and resources. Threats are stressors we perceive as outside our control. When we are repeatedly faced with stressors that we perceive as beyond our ability to deal with them, we develop patterns of spiritual resignation.

Yoga teacher Linda Christy Weiler says "Patterns of resignation are bodily indicators of trauma, submission, and lack of freedom. These patterns are characteristic behaviors, postures, and mannerisms that indicate the underlying emotions of fear, guilt, anger, or sorrow. These patterns imply that something in one's body and one's psyche has been relinquished or diminished. " (Yoga For Prevention of Low Back Pain, Brentwood, TN: 2005, p. 4).

What is diminished in us that leads us to feel stress? We have lost awareness of our essential vitality. In qigong, we recover the joyful flow of universal qi through our bodies and experience a feeling of unity with the wholeness of life. When we allow universal qi to flow smoothly through us, we experience health and well-being. When we are unconscious of the flow of life force within us, we become tense, fearful, and overwhelmed by life's stress. In stress mode, we restrict the flow of qi physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

When universal qi flows smoothly through us, it harmonizes body, emotion, mind, and spirit. According to James MacRitchie "Characteristics of this state are feeling calm, clear, relaxed, aware, strong, centred, whole, integrated, balanced and fully alive – to name but a few" (The Chi Kung Way, San Francisco: Thorsons, 1997, p.xi). MacRitchie calls this state of being a "Chi Kung State" ( "chi kung" is an alternate spelling for "qigong"). I like to call it a Core Energy State, because in this state we are aware of the universal life force within us.

Core Energy is the universal life force within each of us. A Core Energy State occurs when we are aware of universal qi flowing smoothly through all layers of our being.

The key, then, is how do we awaken this awareness? How do we shift from a state of stress to a state of consciously smooth flowing qi?

Meditation is one of the most powerful techniques to facilitate a Core Energy State. Qigong meditation, in particular, is a holistic system that provides cues to facilitate conscious awareness and smooth qi flow. By holistic I mean that qigong works with body, emotion, mind, and spirit to consciously affect the flow of universal qi through the whole person.

Physical exercise systems usually work with physical movement, breathing, and posture. Most meditation systems work with emotional attitude, mental focus, and spiritual intention. Qigong combines all of these into a complete system of self development. Within qigong itself, some systems emphasize physical movement while others emphasize still meditative practice. In my Learn Qigong Meditation Course, we emphasize the still meditative component. Though the emphasis is meditative, the practice involves cues for body, emotion, mind, and spirit and positively benefits these four layers of self.

The Benefits of Qigong Meditation:

1. Reduce stress and create vitality in your body. Qigong meditation relaxes tension, improves blood and lymphatic flow, improves nerve conductivity, positively affects brain waves, brain coherence, and brain chemistry, enhances the efficiency of all physiological systems, and increases immune response and longevity.

2. Balance your emotions and open your heart. Qigong releases emotional holding patterns and opens appropriate emotional responsiveness.

3. Clear, expand, and focus your mind. Qigong is a great meditation system for active minds. It develops your ability to focus your attention, release from negative mindsets, and observe yourself with detachment.

4. Develop spiritual empowerment. Qigong enhances your spiritual awareness by producing a feeling of wholeness and integrity. It improves your ability to cultivate and refine the universal life force within you. Qigong empowers you to actively participate in creating the life you desire.

Why meditate? I've given you some good reasons. What brings YOU to this practice?

Celiac Disease Biopsy Explained: Part I Villous Atrophy

The diagnosis of celiac disease is confirmed by a characteristic abnormal appearance of the small intestine under the microscope. Flattening of the normal finger like projections called villi accompanied by signs of inflammation is taken to indicate damage or injury from the storage protein gluten in wheat and similar proteins in barley and rye. The small intestine biopsy has became the gold standard for establishing the diagnosis of Celiac disease or gluten sensitive enteropathy. Before 1960 gluten withdrawal followed by improvement and subsequent worsening upon rechallenge was the diagnostic criteria.

Early in the 1960’s through the 1970’s the small intestine was biopsied by having people swallow a small metal capsule that was attached to a suction tube. This was used to suction up tissue into the capsule before guillotining off some tissue once the capsule was confirmed to be in the small intestine by x-ray. Now the tissue is obtained by upper endoscopy, the passage of a lighted video scope through the mouth under sedation to the small intestine, where biopsies are obtained with cupped forceps.

Celiac disease biopsy: What does the pathologist look for under the microscope?

The small intestine normally has finger like projections called villi that give it a large surface area or contact area for absorption. The villi result in a shag carpet or terry cloth towel type appearance. Lining the outside surface of each villous are intestinal cells or enterocytes that secrete mucus and absorb fluids, nutrients, minerals like iron, and vitamins like B12. On the surface of the enterocytes are digestive enzymes like lactase that digest lactose or milk sugar. At the base of the villi are crypts or circular like collections of intestinal cells.

Celiac disease biopsy: What is villous atrophy?

Normally, villi are 3-5 times longer than the crypts are tall. However, intestinal injury can result in blunting, shortening (partial villous atrophy) or complete loss of the villi and flattening (villous atrophy) of the intestinal surface. The shag carpet will have bare spots or the terry cloth towel becomes like a tee shirt. The result is lack of absorption of nutrients and water resulting in weight loss, malnutrition, and diarrhea.

Celiac disease biopsy: What if the biopsy does not show atrophy or partial atrophy?

If the villi are at least 3 times as long as the crypts are tall then no flattening or blunting of the villi is present and celiac disease becomes more difficult for the pathologist to diagnose without the history or blood test results. However, an increased number of IEL’s (intra-epitheliel lymphocytes) in the setting of a positive specific blood test for celiac, symptoms and especially if supported by presence of DQ2 and/or DQ8 gene pattern, is highly suggestive of celiac disease. The difficulty comes when the blood tests for the specific tests are negative or not elevated but only the “non-specific” blood tests (anti-gliadin or AGA and anti-reticulin antibodies) are elevated. Also, some people with milder forms of celiac have no blood tests abnormal but have classic biopsy findings of celiac and are termed seronegative (blood test negative) celiacs.

Celiac disease biopsy: Can the biopsy be normal in celiac disease?

By definition, the biopsy has been considered the gold standard for diagnosing celiac. However, recent studies have shown that the biopsy can be normal in some people with celiac. How can this be? The pathologist reading the biopsy may interpret the biopsy as normal based on his or her bias about celiac disease, a failure to appreciate the significance of the presence of IEL’s, or misuse of the older standard of >40 IEL’s per 100. However, more importantly is the recent recognition that normal appearing biopsies may not be normal. Electron microscopy has revealed ultra-structural abnormalities in apparent normal biopsies of people confirmed to have celiac disease. Special stains, that include immune labeling of lymphocytes, have also confirmed increased numbers of certain types of specific lymphocytes in the villi of intestinal biopsies of people confirmed to have celiac. The bottom line is that a normal biopsy does not definitively exclude celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

Celiac diasease biopsy: What are other possible causes of biopsy changes that mimic celiac disease?

Cow’s milk protein sensitive enteropathy (CMSE), viral or bacterial infections, medications (especially aspirin like arthritis medications e.g. ibuprofen etc), autoimmune enteropathy, Helicobacter pylori infection (the stomach ulcer bacteria), AIDs, common variable immunodeficiency, and lymphoma of the intestine are all possible causes of small intestine changes that may mimic celiac. However, if you have classic celiac type symptoms, a positive celiac specific antibody (anti-endomysial antibody or tissue transglutaminase antibody) and a positive response to a gluten free diet then celiac is the likely cause. The likelihood is further increased if you carry one or both of the two major genes associated with celiac disease, DQ2 and/or DQ8. Normalization of celiac specific blood tests and the biopsy after a gluten free diet confirms the diagnosis of celiac disease.

What Are Parasites and How a Parasite Cleanse Can Help

A parasite is an organism that lives on a host (an animal, a plant, or yes-even a human) and leeches off of it, taking nutrients from the host without giving anything back. Parasites are inherently selfish, stealing the nutrients from its host and causing nothing but problems for the unlucky party. What this means for the host is that the immune system is compromised, making it more difficult to fight off disease.  There are all sorts of creatures that fall under the umbrella term “parasite.” Yeast, bacteria, viruses, and worms are just a couple of the potentially troublesome creatures.

So why should you care? Well, parasites can cause all sorts of problems for humans. For a healthy human, parasites are not typically a problem as the immune system is equipped to deal with parasites without intervention. There are even what might be called “helpful bacteria” living inside each and every one of us. Yeast infections are an example of a time when the bad yeasts overcome the helpful bacteria, creating uncomfortable problems for the host. Of course, most people can overcome something like this with a simple prescription or a natural remedy.

However, if you are unhealthy to begin with, it may be more difficult. People whose pH is already out of balance, people with poor circulation, or those with an already existing disease might find that the parasites take advantage of such a situation, invading the body at its most vulnerable. Parasites seek out these vulnerable situations and will move toward these areas of the body (the places where they best thrive). What this means is that the parasite may be present in any one of your body parts, including your organs and yes, even in your blood. People who have diseases might find that a parasite is actually making the disease worse-all without the person’s knowledge.

A parasite cleanse is a necessary step to ridding the body of harmful parasites. There are lab tests to determine whether or not you have parasite. Unfortunately, these tests only screen for about forty different parasites, meaning it’s possible to test negative for a parasite infection when you actually do have a parasite. Some estimates show that up to 80% of the world’s population is a host to some form of parasite-yes, that’s world population, meaning developing nations aren’t the only place where these pesky parasites lurk.

How do I know I have a parasitic infection?

Of course, there are all sorts of different symptoms of a possible parasitic infection. Why? Because parasites don’t just infect one part of the body. Here are some possible places where parasites might lurk, and the symptoms which accompany them:

  • Mucous membrane: problems with your bladder, lungs, sinuses, or vagina, for example, may be worsened by the presence of a parasite
  • The skin: Itching, swelling, rashes, and even psoriasis, eczema, hives, and dermatitis are all potential signs of a parasitic infection
  • The digestive tract: this manifests in something as simple as indigestion, constipation, as well as other types of pain in the stomach, colitis, or even ulcers
  • The lymphatic system: allergies may be a sign of parasites in the lymphatic system, as digested food is released into the intestines
  • Joints or tissue: inflamed arthritis, or other muscle/joint pain may be a sign of a parasite lurking
  • In general, things like fatigue (especially after eating) and anemia may be indicative of parasites in the body

Okay, but why would I have a parasite?

Well, there are a variety of ways of getting a parasite. Here are some of the most common:

Pets: Unfortunately, one of the most common ways of getting a parasite is through a pet. Women who are pregnant are told not to empty the cat litter box for this very reason. Washing your hands is always a good idea, but even that doesn’t necessarily rid you of a potential parasitic infection.

Water: Most of us have heard the warning “don’t drink the water” when we’re traveling in unfamiliar places. This is because residents who grew up in the area are used to the parasites and have adapted to accommodate them. Foreigners not used to these parasites may unknowingly harm their bodies by drinking the water the locals drink. Unfortunately, these parasites may lurk for a long time without the person’s knowledge. Therefore, travel may cause parasites like malaria and roundworm to spread around the world.

Food: Another way to get a parasitic infection is through the food we eat. Cheese and yogurt, for instance, contain both bacteria and yeast beneficial to the human body. However, if they are not aged or fermented in the right way, the helpful bacteria may turn to bad parasites. Raw foods are another way parasites spread, meat and fish being particularly common ways of spreading parasites if they are not correctly cooked.

Environment: People who live in either agricultural areas where pesticides are common or in high smog areas are particularly susceptible to parasites. Bacterial and parasite levels are high, for instance, after a heavy rain, creating a risk of infection.

So I think I might have a parasite. What should I do now?

First off, don’t panic! The last thing you want to do is get rid of your beloved cat Sparky just because you fear a parasite lurks on his or her body. What you do want to do is remain aware of the potential risks for infection and take the necessary steps toward eliminating these harmful parasites. There are ways of detoxifying, for instance, that are as simple as regular exercise and eating healthier food. One of the best ways to ensure that your body is free of parasites, of course, is through a parasite cleanse.

Making Money Selling Plants, Trees, Shrubs on the Internet

How to make money selling plants, trees, etc on the Internet can be done using several methods. The first key to making money is to take advantage of the newest growing interest in the green industry. Many people who have never grown so much as a house plant are now seriously considering trying to grow small gardens or patio gardens. City dwellers that do not have the space normally are interested in finding new ways to incorporate plants into their everyday lives for better living and to save money.

A good question to ask when selling plants, trees, etc. on the Internet can be; what kind of plants are you going to offer? You could offer a website online that has different tabs for vegetable plants, seeds, annuals and bi-annuals, tropical plants and houseplants. Let us not forget the insect eating varieties or natural insect repelling plants. The green industry is a strong growing concept to many environmentally minded gardeners who do not want to use chemicals in their gardening efforts.

Watering gardening is also popular and you could certainly cash in on the growing trend for water gardening that has become so popular throughout the United States. Many gardeners need water plants, bog plants, fish breeding floating plants, small trees and shrubs to decorate their lily ponds. Water gardening offers just another way to market how to make money selling plants, trees, etc. on the Internet. Adding garden statues, bird baths and other decorative products could be a money making addition to your website.

Also focus on one area, such as herbs. The Internet is all about niches. Herbs are more widely grown in certain parts of the country now than vegetable plants. Herbs are easy to grow and transplant easy. You could offer herbs in plant, seedling and seeds. Many herbs can be sold as a growing sprout kit which could make you a nice profit. Herbs come in so many various shapes, sizes and forms from bushy plants, tubers, sprouts, shrubs and vines.

You could even offer products such as tea infusers, dehydrators and growing mediums for different kinds of herbs. A great idea is to focus on specialty plants such as fruiting shrubs, dwarf fruit trees, ornamental and house plants. Pictures of plants in full bloom would look pleasing on a website and draw the eye to your products site. Remember that a picture is worth a thousand words and most Internet searchers would not stay on a page where they get eyestrain from the white page when the wording begins to blur. Keep your customers attention on your Internet site by adding some clear colorful pictures of the plants you intend to sell.

When selling stuff on the Internet, do not forget the importance of posting your site to search engines. You cannot sell anything if your customers can not find you. Word of mouth is a great tool to use and you should take advantage of using an email program that will email periodically any specials, new products, etc to your list of potential buyers. Incorporating an online Internet company newsletter could also help you build a potential customer email base by offering a free newsletter to potential buyers who stop by your site to take a look. A free newsletter is an attention grabber that can help keep a buyer on your site longer.

Do not forget the importance of traffic! Foot traffic is where you have a brick and mortar store. An Internet site needs traffic to or you would not have any customers. Traffic is important to your site but make sure if you buy traffic that you are getting quality traffic, not page leapers. Quality traffic is targeted traffic. You want traffic directed to your site that is actually looking for the products you are selling. There are sites where you can buy traffic cheaply but beware you get what you pay for. You do not want someone looking for baby bottles being redirected to your site for growing plants. They would not stay long.

The Symbolic Meanings of Numbers

Learning numerology involves two stages or phases-learning the meaning of the numbers and calculating the various personal number values. This article is about the first-learning the symbolic meaning of the numbers. Once you learn these symbolic values, you can apply their meanings to number expressions of the numeroscope. These meanings can also be applied to astrology, cartomancy, and metaphysics in general. They can be applied in the course of your daily life to discover the underlying purpose of whatever event is occurring or whatever activity you are performing.

In numerology, every point in the universe, the infinite mind, or divine intelligence has access to information regarding all other points regardless of distance in space and time (past, present, and future). This information is contained in the archetypes of numbers, which are only partially comprehensible to humans. Knowledge of the number archetypes allows a person to align his or her will and ego with the purposes of the universe. Knowledge of number archetypes may also allow one to participate in and direct the ongoing processes of the universe or of his or her life.

Just like the zodiac, every number symbolizes a step in the process of creation. The first step is symbolized by the number one. The second step is symbolized by the number two, and so on. For example, if the numbers of a particular day add up to the number three, you know that this day favors the third step in whatever process you are engaged. If the address of a building you are in adds up to the number five, you know that this building favors the fifth step of any process. If you encounter someone whose name adds up to the number eight, you know that the energies of this person favor the eighth step of any process.

Interpretation by the Numbers

The meanings for the numbers 1 through 10, 0, and the master numbers 11, 22, 33, and 44 are given below, accompanied by personality traits and behaviors commonly associated with each number. Where applicable, the Pythagorean meanings and associated geometric shapes are given. Also where applicable, the planets, urges, and elements of C. C. Zain’s esoteric psychology and the crises and resulting personal power of Erik H. Erikson’s identity development are included. In general, odd numbers are masculine, active, and positive. Even numbers are feminine, receptive, and negative.

Number 1 — Individuality, Purpose

Pythagorean numerology begins with the number 1. Called the monad, 1 is represented by a point. It is the source of all numbers, the origin of all things. It symbolizes the primal state of unity, indivisibility, and oneness. Some say that it is both an odd and an even number. The 1 is the number of God, the Prime Masculine Number, and the Yang. It manifests as the active principle, the number of consciousness, light, the ego, the father, and authority. The Pythagoreans considered 1 to be good, desirable, essential, and indivisible. The 1 is associated with the Sun, fire, and the colors red and red-orange.

Wherever the 1 is found in the numeroscope, it indicates the beginning of a new cycle, beginnings in general, creation, individuality, and selfhood. In esoteric psychology, the 1 signifies the Sun and the power urges, i.e., the desire to survive and to be something. In identity development, the 1 signifies the trust versus mistrust crisis from which arises the power of hope.

Personality traits and behaviors associated with 1 include: adventure, aggressiveness, aloneness, ambition, arrogance, assertiveness, bossiness, confidence, courage, creativity, desire, determination, dignity, direction, dominant, egotism, egotistical, false pride, independence, individualism, individuality, initiative, intolerance, leadership, loneliness, masculinity, newness, obstinate, optimism, originality, pioneering, pomposity, powerful, prestige, resistance, self-assurance, self-centeredness, selfishness, solitariness, strength, tyrannical, and willpower.

Number 2 — Polarity, Union

The number 2 is called the dyad and is represented by a line. It indicates the loss of the primal unity. The 2 is duality, and the Pythagoreans believed that 2 is a number of excess, the first feminine number, and a defective number. The 2 represents the principles of matter, manifestation, and material evolution. The 1 has been separated into 2. With the 2, a new relationship is now possible. Something has been created which is external of the 1. 2 is both the forming of dichotomies, the division of things into two categories, and the initial emergence of life. Awareness of the other creates tension and makes union and partnership possible. The 2 is the prime feminine number, the number of polarities, pairs, partners, opposites, and antithesis. The 2 is associated with the Moon, water, the oceans, and the color orange. Sometimes 2 is associated with blue.

Wherever 2 is found in the numeroscope, it indicates externalization, separation, tension, conflict, union, partnership, cooperation, rhythm, attachment, nurturing, femininity, and motherhood. The 3 is the principle of spirit and the process of spiritual evolution through reconciliation of opposites by finding common elements or points of agreement. The 3 is the process of synthesis. The 3 represents the trinity or triune god found in most religions. The 1 is the thesis, the 2 is the antithesis, and the 3 is the synthesis. The 3 harmonizes dichotomies and is considered to be an extremely lucky number. It is ease, flow, grace, happiness, abundance, and rest. The 3 is associated with Venus, love, harmony, balance, intelligence, and the color yellow.

It is also the number of the elements, the seasons, the ages of man, lunar phases, and virtues. It represents the power to manifest ideas in the material world. It is said to be the root of all manifested things. In many ancient cultures the 4 symbolized the world, the Earth, and any Establishment. It is the number of foundations, solid matter, the points of the compass, the seasons, the (classical Greek) elements, the winds, completion, solidarity, stability, equilibrium, the (classical Greek) four kingdoms of matter. The 4 is action, activity, energy, power, strength, crisis, sacrifice, the square, the cross, and processes of building and creating solid, concrete forms in the material world. It is the four psychological functions in Analytic Psychology (Jungian). The 4 is associated with Saturn and/or Mars, the Earth, and the colors red, green, or brown.

Wherever the 4 is found in the numeroscope, it indicates the presence of activity and strong energies needed to overcome obstacles, conflicts, and crises. The power to manifest one’s dreams in the material world and/or to actualize important relationships is present. Thus, the 5 represents the Quintessence, humanity, the magician, magic, the (Western) senses, and the (Chinese) elements. The 5 is the masculine marriage number, because it unites the first female number and the first male number by addition. It has the virtue of being incorruptible, because all multiples of 5 end in 5. The 5 is associated with Mars and/or Uranus, the Air, and the color blue.

Wherever the 5 is found in the numeroscope, it indicates the presence of intelligence, creativity, special talents, uniqueness, individual expression and possibly genius. In esoteric psychology, the 5 signifies Mars and the aggressive elements of the ability to defend and secure. Number 6 — Responsibility, Success

The number 6 is represented by the hexad. The 6 is the feminine marriage number, because it unifies 2 and 3 through multiplication. It is also considered the first perfect number and is the area of a 3-4-5 triangle. The 6 represents the benefits that come from activity and productivity. To the Pythagoreans, 6 was the perfect number since, when multiplied by itself it results in the number itself (6 X 6 = 42 ~ 4 + 2 = 6). The 6 was also considered to be a perfect number because ~ 1 + 2 + 3 = 6. The 6 combines the ease, harmony, good luck, synthesis of the 3 with the polarity and awareness of the number 2. The 6 is an active, productive, and successful number 3. It brings good fortune, but through effort, productivity, and activity. The 6 is also related to the human soul, harmony, creation, love, marriage, domestic happiness, and matters of the heart, by some numerologists. The 6 is associated with Jupiter, the Earth element, productivity, and the color indigo.

Wherever the 6 is found in the numeroscope, it indicates a high likelihood of success and prosperity through work efforts. In esoteric psychology, the 6 signifies Jupiter and the religious elements of faith in leadership and tolerance. Number 7 — Thought/Consciousness

To the Pythagoreans the number 7 is represented by the heptad and is associated with the Greek maiden goddess Athene. They considered 7 to be a virgin number because it has no products, and a circle can never be broken into 7 equal parts. The 7 symbolizes the cosmic process of creativity. It combines the divine trinity of the 3 and the power of physical manifestation of the 4. The 7 represents the stages of manifestation and the seven aspects of God as manifested through the seven stars or angels. It represents creation, divinity, and religious and fated activities. It symbolizes occult mysteries, magical ceremonies, and psychic and clairvoyant powers. The 7 is considered to be a difficult number to interpret in a specific and accurate manner. The 7 is associated with Saturn, religion, devotion, authority, royalty, the Earth element, and the color purple.

Wherever the 7 is found in the numeroscope, it is very likely that religion and spirituality figure prominently. Either the exoteric and/or the esoteric aspects of religion may be present. Strange and fated occurrences are likely as well. In esoteric psychology, the 7 signifies Saturn and the safety elements, and the abilities to escape from enemies and provide security. In identity development, the 7 signifies the generativity versus stagnation crisis from which arises the power of caring.

Because it is the 4 (action, activity, energy, and crisis), divided by the 2 (externalization, separation, tension, and conflict), the 8 symbolizes the point of maximum dynamic activity, the point of the greatest energy and power. It is considered to symbolize material success and worldly involvement. The 8 is associated with the Sun and Uranus, activity, frustrations, busy work, and the colors rose and the transitional color between red and violet.

Wherever the 8 is found in the numeroscope, it indicates intense energy needed to finalize the details of and structure. At times the 8 can be very frustrating. At other times, it may feel exhilarating when our consciousness flows with the work we are performing. In esoteric psychology, the 8 signifies Uranus and the individualistic elements, and the abilities to depart from the past and develop better ways. In identity development, the 8 signifies the integrity versus despair crisis from which arises the power of wisdom.

Personality traits and behaviors associated with the 8 include: administration, authority, broad, business, busy work, capability, carelessness, comprehension, concentrated effort, control, cruelty, eccentric, efficiency, energy, extravagance, executive ability, extreme individualism, frustration, greed, guilt-ridden, haughty, hard work, impatience, lack, improvidence, leadership, loss, management, material accomplishment, materialism, money, obstinate, organization, power, promotion, rewards, ruthless, self-reliance, skill, strain, strength, struggle, success, tenacity, thoroughness, tough, unscrupulous, vindictiveness, and waste.

Number 9 –Completion

The number 9 is referred to as the nonad or ennead. It is the first masculine cube. It is also considered incorruptible because no matter how many times it is multiplied, it reduces to itself. The 9 can be thought of as a very spiritual number or as a very lucky number because it is three 3’s. The 9 is similar to the 7 in that it is a very spiritual number and one that prefers isolation and withdrawal. It is actually the last number in regards to numerology because all other numbers can be reduced to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9. The 9 represents the human gestation period, ending in the completion of one cycle and the beginning of the next. It is also similar to gestation in that the actual activity of creation is not visible to the material world. The 9 is may be associated with Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto. Because of its universal qualities, it may be associated with all the colors of the spectrum, bright blue, and psychedelic colors.

In the numeroscope, the 9 suggests creativity, spirituality, withdrawal, and completion. A 9 in the numeroscope indicates that the person will give birth, probably several times, to the development of spiritual ideas, mysticism, and psychic phenomena. In esoteric psychology, the 9 signifies Neptune and the utopian elements, and the yearning for better conditions.

Personality traits and behaviors associated with 9 include: attainment, benevolence, compassion, completion, creativity, dedication, devotion, disruption, emotion, expulsion, extremes, generosity, genius, imagination, impersonality, intellect, intensity, intuition, limitless power, meditation, mysticism, personal loss, philanthropy, psychic phenomena, regeneration, religious devotion, service, selflessness, shyness, ulterior motives, understanding of the spirit, upheaval, universal awareness, and universality.

Number 10 — Rebirth

The number 10 is called the decad. It represents completion, infinity, and rebirth. It is also the number of our fingers and toes. The 10 is said to contain all the numbers because after 10, the numbers repeat themselves. The number 10 is generally not used in numerology because the 10 is reduced to 1 in numerology (1 + 0 = 1). The 10 has characteristics of both the 0 and the 9. In esoteric psychology, the 10 signifies Pluto and the universal welfare elements, and preservation through cooperation among individuals.

Number 0 — Everything and Nothing

The 0 is not included in Pythagorean numerology. It represents God unmanifest, i.e., Spirit without Matter and without things. It is God before creation, especially physical or material creation. It is Divinity without awareness. The 0, or circle is divine potential upon which no action has been taken. It is the cosmos before the cosmos comes into being, before the Big Bang, or whatever. It is also a symbol of infinity. The 0 also reminds us of the positive value of powerlessness. In metaphysical symbolism, a circle with a dot in its center indicates that creation or physical manifestation has begun. It especially symbolizes that the Spirit or God, has divided into individual parts so that it may come to know itself. This division is not real. It is the false perception of mater or material objects. In astrology, God manifest is represented by the symbol for the Sun. The Sun is the individualized spirit that sustains each of us. The 0 is not used in most numerological calculations or in the numeroscope. The reason is that 0 + any number = the number. The 0 has its own significance, but it does not add anything to numerological calculations.

Master Numbers

The term master number refers to two, three, or four numbers which are considered to be above and beyond the normal spectrum of the average human being. These numbers imply genius and superior accomplishments brought over from previous lives. Master numbers may possess greater potential or higher vibrations than other numbers. They may be highly charged and difficult to handle. They may take great effort to integrate into one’s personality. Realizing the power of master numbers may require time and maturity. After interpreting a number as a master number, it is usually reduced numerically to a single digit, and the standard interpretation is applied as well.

The numbers 11, 22, 33, and 44 have all been referred to as master numbers. Master numbers are interpreted before they are reduced to single digits. As previously mentioned, most numerologists recognized 11 and 22 as master numbers. A few use 33 as a master number, and even fewer use 44 as a master number. Some numerologists do not use any master numbers.

Number 11 — Inspiration/Illumination

The number 11 refers to idealism and outstanding accomplishments that are largely intellectual or mental in nature. It often indicates artistic or musical talent. The individual with an 11 is said to be inspired, and he or she is usually an inspiration to others. An 11 may also display characteristics of a 2. Of course, not everyone with an 11 is capable of manifesting the talents and characteristics of an 11. In such cases, the 11 becomes an ordinary 2.

Personality traits and behaviors associated with 11 include: altruism, aviation, creativity, confusion, debauchery, deception, delusion, destruction, dreamer, ecstasy, elation, electricity, escapism, evangelism, faith, fame, fanaticism, greatness, idealism, ideals, illumination, impracticality, independence, inner conflict, insight, inspiration, intangible, intuition, limelight, mysticism, nervousness, obligation, originality, peace, perversity, phobias, principles, psychic, radicalism, rebellious, religion, reverence, sacrifice, self-destruction, sensitivity, shyness, spirituality, spiritual vision, subconscious, tactlessness, truth, understanding, and uselessness.

Number 22 — Masterful/Master Builder

The 22 is interpreted as a number of great material accomplishments, often through the use of spiritual or magical abilities. It is the most powerful of all the numbers. A person with a 22 turns dreams into reality. He or she is referred to as a Master Builder. A 22 may also display characteristics of a 4. Of course, not every with a 22 is capable of manifesting the talents and characteristics of an 22. In such cases, the 22 becomes an ordinary 4.

Personality traits and behaviors associated with 22 include: achiever, ambition, broad vision, discipline, distribution, intense, limitless, materialistic, methodical, pressure, practicality, resourceful, self-confidence, strong, and success.

Number 33 — Initiate/Master Teacher

The number 33 symbolizes the principle of guidance. It is the most influential of all numbers. The person with a 33 has made great spiritual accomplishments in previous lives. He or she has successfully integrated the 11 and the 22 and has risen to a higher level. He or she has become the Master Teacher, and his or her dharma or spiritual purpose is to uplift humanity spiritually by communicating the wisdom of the ages. He or she must forsake all personal ambitions.

The Master Teacher displays a high level of devotion to truth. He or she must seek understanding and wisdom before preaching to others. The Master Teacher must find original ways to encourage spiritual evolution. The arts, medicine, or some unconventional form of healing are possible mediums through which the Master Teacher addresses the public. He or she must share the truths he or she knows. If not, the Master Teacher may stagnate. His or her opportunities for further growth dwindle away until he or she performs the duties of the Master Teacher. A 33 may also display characteristics of a 6. Of course, not every with a 33 is capable of manifesting the talents and characteristics of a 33. In such cases, the 33 becomes an ordinary 6.

Personality traits and behaviors associated with 33 include: artist, blessing, bravery, Christ-like, compassionate, courage, discipline, educator, guidance, healing, healer, honest, inspiration, love, martyr, monk, physician, protection, self-sacrifice, teacher of teachers, and truth.

The 33 manifests only when the birth day, the birth month, and the birth year (day/month/year) each add up to 11, when the month and day add up to 22 and the year to 11, when the month and year add up to 22 and the day to 11, or the day and year add up to 22 and the month to 11. For example, during the 21st century the years 2009, 2018, 2027, 2037, 2045, 2054, 2063, 2072, 2081, and 2090 add up to 11. During the 20th century, only the year 1901 adds up to an 11. Years like 1991 add up to a 2. 1991 = 1 + 9 + 9 + 1 = 20 (1 + 9 = 10, 10 + 9 = 19, 19 + 1 = 20, 2 + 0 = 2).

The master numbers 11, 22, and 33 are said to represent a triangle called the Triangle of Enlightenment. In relation to the Triangle, the number 11 represents the vision, 22 combines vision with action, and 33 offers guidance to the world.

Number 44 — Masterful/Master Manager

The 44 is the number of the Master Manager. The Master Manager is extremely rare. He or she is a conscious bridge between the physical plane and higher planes or realms. The Master Manager is capable of manifesting whatever he or she focuses on with desire. He or she is learning to be a creator. A 44 may also display characteristics of an 8. Of course, not every with a 44 is capable of manifesting the talents and characteristics of a 44. In such cases, the 44 becomes an ordinary 8.

How Can You Know if You Have TB?

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the Koch bacillus, a germ that belongs to the Mycobacterium family. It primarily affects the lungs and it is contagious. Besides the lungs, TB can also affect lymph nodes, intestinal tract, kidneys, bones, and brain.

If you have a strong immune system you could not get ill of TB even if you come in contact with infected subjects. You could also inactivate the virus and keep it locked in your lungs by creating with the help of macrophages a scar tissue all around the infected area, but in the moment you get a weaker immune system (like those people who have HIV) the bacillus could reactivate and manifest and even infect other organs.

Symptoms of TB infection are: cough that lasts longer than three weeks, fever, breathing problems, night sweats, fatigability, chest pains, and loss of weight and appetite.

TB is transmittable from mother to fetus and symptoms of the infection appear during the first year of life: fever, poor feeding, breathing problems, failure to thrive and even swollen liver and spleen.

Healthy persons receive the infection if living or working in the same place with the infected person. By coughing, shouting or sneezing, the infected person spreads the germs into the air, and others inhale them. Shaking hands or touching clothes does not infect others.

Another form of tuberculosis is transmitted by drinking unpasteurized milk. The responsible bacterium for this form of TB infection is called Mycobacterium bovis. Years before, this bacterium was a major cause of TB in children, but now since most milk is pasteurized (a heating process that kills the bacteria) it does not cause TB any more.

There are some tests doctors do to find out if one is infected. First of all, they perform a skin test, meaning that they inject into your skin a purified protein derived for the TB germ. After more then 48 hours the injected skin area will present a bump. If the bump is large, the test is considered to be positive, meaning that the TB infection has occurred.

If this test does not convince doctors about your condition, they will ask you to do a thoracic X-ray which shows where in the lungs the infection could be localized and how greatly it is expanded.

If the suspected person coughs, doctors take the sputum and with the help of the microscope they search for the TB germs in the sputum. This is quite an accurate method of diagnosing TB.

The HIV patients are at high risk of developing TB, due to their weakened immune system. Some of them are infected with TB and the virus is not active, but at any moment the virus can wake up and manifest. In the world, there are about 38 million people living with AIDS and about one-third of them also have TB. Very often tuberculosis affects the HIV patients long before other problems correlated with HIV develop.

Tuberculosis seems to appear more frequent in crowded, non-hygienic places like: prisons, juvenile detention centers, and homeless shelters.

General preventing methods of spreading the TB is hospitalizing the infected person, and practically isolating it from those who are healthy. Treatment must be followed at least 6 months constantly because interrupting the treatment could lead to spreading the disease in other organs, like: kidneys, intestinal tract, and lymph nodes, and even leading to the death of the infected person.

For the treatment to be effective, patients must take their prescribed dugs during all the period of time they were advised by the doctor, otherwise the bacillus could get multiple drug resistant and this would only lead to a crisis of effective drugs against tuberculosis, and to a possible epidemic.

How to Treat Dog Heartworm Disease

Heartworm disease occurs when a dog becomes infested with a roundworm called Dirofilaria immitis. It was first identified in the United States in 1856 and occurred most frequently on the seacoast in the southeastern United States. Heartworms are parasitic worms, which inhabit the heart muscle and lungs of infected dogs. Heartworm disease can cause serious health problems including death due to heart failure or pneumonia. Dogs are considered the definitive host for heartworms. However, heartworms may infect more than 30 species of animals (eg, coyotes, foxes, wolves and other wild canids, domestic cats and wild felids, ferrets, sea lions, etc.) and humans as well.

Heartworms belong to the same class of worms as roundworms. In fact, they look a bit like roundworms, but that is where the similarity ends. When a mosquito carrying infective heartworm larvae bites a dog and transmits the infection, the larvae grow, develop, and migrate in the body over a period of several months to become sexually mature male and female worms. These reside in the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. Even as immature adults, the worms mate and the females release their offspring (microfilariae) into the blood stream. The time elapsed from when the larvae enter the dog until the minute offspring can be detected in the blood (pre-patent period) is about six to seven months.

The severity and onset of clinical signs relate to 3 things: the number of worms, the duration of the infection and the dog's response. Many dogs infected with heartworms may not show any evidence of the infection in the early stages of the disease. Signs can eventually appear and will worsen with increased numbers of worms and with lengthy infections, making early detection and prevention programs an important part of managing your pet's health.

Initially dogs tend to develop a cough and experience difficulty breathing. They may also exhibit a decreased tolerance to exercise, develop fainting episodes or suffer severe weight loss. Since the heart and lungs are affected, many of the clinical signs seen or observed are typical of heart failure, pneumonia or other debilitating diseases.

Dog heartworm disease can be treated by medications. These medications are:

  • Adulticide
  • Microfilaricide
  • Melarsomine dihydrochloride (Immiticide®, Merial)

Dog heartworm disease can be prevented by medications. These medications are:

  • Diethylcarbamazine
  • Macrocyclic Lactone (ML)
  • Ivermectin (Heartgard®, Heartgard Plus®, Merial, IverhartTM Plus, Virbac)

MicroRNAs Play a Critical Role in Immune System by Regulating – Fine Tuning Inflammatory Response

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have proven to be extremely important part of the gene expression regulation mechanism. LC Sciences microRNA profiling services have helped many researchers to explore and examine miRNA cellular networks. Expression profiling and functional studies indicate that miRNAs participate in the regulation of almost every cellular process investigated and that changes in their expression have a profound effect on their gene targeting activities. While the role of miRNAs in cell development and tumorigenesis was recognized early on, the importance of these small RNAs on immune system development and function has only been touched on recently. Initial studies have indicated that miRNAs have a role in the regulation of immune response and inflammation. Although inflammation protects against pathogenic stimuli and promotes healing, it may actually cause more damage than the activating event if not strictly controlled by essential, internal negative regulators. Out of control immune response causes various forms of chronic inflammatory diseases.

A quartet of papers published recently (July-Aug 09) have shown that miRNAs can act as fine tuners to regulate inflammatory response to various pathogens / stimuli. Many of these are a first look at their respective areas of study and illustrate that miRNA profiling leads to better understanding of this fine tuning process by shedding light on the immunological signaling pathways and the mechanism of biogenesis of miRNAs.

Ting Chen and colleagues at Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China used a combination of microarray and real time quantitative PCR to analyze miRNA expression profiles in oxidized low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) -stimulated human primary peripheral blood monocytes to study the possible roles of miRNAs in atherosclerotic processes in these cells1. Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arterial wall affecting an enormous number of people. Basically, macrophages uptake oxLDL, convert to foam cells, secrete proinflammatory factors, and undergo necrosis to form plaques. Microarray analysis showed an aberrant miRNA expression in oxLDL-stimulated cells and real-time quantitative PCR validated the results.

Specifically, they found that miRNA-125a-5p expression had increased more than 11-fold. Bioinformatics predicted its target to be the ORP9 gene that not surprisingly, regulates lipid metabolism, and this was confirmed by luciferase assay. They next showed that inhibition of miRNA-125a-5p increased secretion of inflammatory cytokines and significantly induced lipid uptake indicating that miRNA-125a-5p may be an important negative regulator of the inflammatory response in oxLDL-stimulated monocytes / macrophages and may play a protective role against the development of excessive inflammation leading to atherosclerosis.
Viral invasion stimulates an innate immune response, but as discussed earlier, if left uncontrolled this immune response can cause inflammatory disorders. So it is necessary for immune cells to use various layers of negative regulators (including miRNA expression) to avoid excessive inflammation when encountering viral invasion. However, it is possible that these negative regulators, though critical to the host, may also in fact be used by viruses as a method for evading and subverting of the hosts immune responses, aiding their survival in host cells. Jin Hou and colleagues at Tsinghua University School of Medicine, Beijing, China studied the fine tuning effect that miRNA has on inflammatory response to viral infection and propose a new mechanism for the evasion of innate immune control by viruses2.

Upon recognition of viral components, host cells are activated to produce interferons and proinflammatory cytokines. The correct level of production of these proteins induces cellular resistance to the viral infection; however, excessive production may promote the development of immunopathological conditions or immune disorders. Therefore, production must be tightly controlled to strike a delicate balance. Microarray revealed, and real-time quantitative PCR confirmed, many up-regulated miRs in vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) infected mouse macrophages. Specifically miR-146a expression was significantly up-regulated. Further studies revealed that miR-146a negatively regulated VSV-triggered interferon production (which is necessary to exert feedback control over inflammation) promoting VSV replication in macrophages.

Previously, others have found, in addition to the miRNAs encoded by viruses themselves, viral infection to be able to up-regulate or down-regulate expression of miRNAs in host cells which suggests that the regulatory network of miRNA expression and immune response is complex to say the least. However, there lies still another level of complexity in the control of the immune response to stimuli / pathogens by miRNAs.

Tina Ruggiero and colleagues at The RNA Technology Center, Genoa, Italy studied how the regulation of biogenesis of a specific miRNA regulates inflammation3. They investigated the contribution of miRNAs to macrophage activation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). MiRNA microarray analysis of certain macrophages revealed that LPS significantly induces the expression of a single miRNA, miR-155 and this induction depends on enhanced miR-155 maturation from its precursors which is promoted by the KH-type splicing regulatory protein (KSRP). They then demonstrated that both inhibition of miR-155 and KSRP knockdown enhanced the LPS-induced expression of select inflammation mediators and they further showed that the effect of KSRP knockdown is reverted by mature miR-155 indicating that miR-155 finely tunes the expression of these inflammation mediators in response to LPS.

Previous studies have demonstrated that Toll-like receptor (TLR) stimulation induces different, but overlapping T helper cytokine / chemokine profiles suggestive of a complex interplay of stimulatory and inhibitory signals which demands tight regulation. Manuela Del Corno and colleagues at Instituto Superiore di Sanita, Rome, Italy studied TLR signaling activation by pathogens and report in this study that CC chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) secretion triggered by TLR4 or TLR8 engagement is strongly inhibited upon simultaneous activation of both TLRs in human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MD-DCs) 4. They used microarray to show that this combination of stimulus also effected miRNA expression and wonder whether these regulators of gene expression could somehow contribute to the fine tuning of CCL2 expression in MD-DCs. They suggest that a complete understanding of the role of TLRs in host response to pathogens will require a complete decoding of these multiple receptor interactions and that their findings should serve as a stimulus for future studies of the role of miRNA in DC-driven immune responses.

It is well known now that miRNAs are important players for regulation of cellular activities and it makes sense that they would be involved in a system that requires fine tuned control to function properly such as the immune system. Expression profiling is often the first look at the role that miRNA can play in biological systems and is enabling new discoveries in this exciting field of study.

Ultimately, the identification of miRNAs and their respective targets, and a better understanding of their expression in response to various stimuli / pathogens may reveal that miRNAs offer multiple new therapeutic targets / strategies for fine tuning the immune response to treat and prevent of a number of inflammatory diseases.

Living With Oral Herpes: Non-Prescription Treatment Approaches

Today the herpes virus is extremely widespread among adults, yet those living with it know how drastically it can interfere with day-to-day life. There is the pain, itchiness, and stinging of outbreaks, not to mention the embarrassment of a cold sore. Even between outbreaks, there is the daily fear that another may be coming soon, the constant paranoia that any small blemish or pain may be the beginning of a blister or cold sore.

Because there is no cure for herpes, the battle may feel hopeless. However, there are numerous ways you can decrease the lifetime and intensity of a cold sore, as well as decreasing the frequency of outbreaks. In this article, I discuss a few basic things everyone living with the herpes virus should know, from avoiding passing it to partners to a variety of non-prescription treatments.

Transmitting the Herpes Virus

While the majority of American adults test positive for the herpes virus, many people see few or no symptoms. Unfortunately, the virus can still be spread in the absence of symptoms. Oral herpes, evidenced by cold sores, is contagious during an outbreak and also in the days leading up to it. Those infected with the herpes virus should be careful not to pass it to others. During an outbreak, be extremely cautious not to exchange saliva with any non-affected individual, including sharing food, drinks, or utensils.

Unfortunately, there is currently neither vaccination nor cure for the herpes virus, although at least one potential vaccination has made it to the testing stages. However, there are numerous effective ways to mitigate the symptoms. With some basic knowledge and the right tools, it’s possible to reduce the frequency and duration of outbreaks so they need not interfere with daily life.

Herpes and the Immune System

While a strong immune system will not prevent you from getting infected with the herpes virus, it has a direct effect on the number, severity, and duration of outbreaks. As long as your immune system is going strong, the likelihood of getting an outbreak is small. However, there are numerous factors that can weaken your immune system, giving the virus an opportunity to break though your defenses and resulting in much-dreaded outbreaks. Some factors, such as job or family stress, weather changes, or exposure to other viruses, are out of your control. However, lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and vitamins and supplements, are completely in your control. Keeping in good physical condition, eating lots of fruits and vegetables, and taking vitamins that support your immune system can go a long way towards keeping your herpes in remission. When choosing a vitamin or supplement, look for one with numerous immune-supporting ingredients, including Vitamins C & D, and Echinacea.

Anti-viral medications are scientifically shown to be the most effective long-term treatment for herpes. While there is currently no way to remove the virus from the body altogether, these medications can keep it dormant. Anti-virals can be applied topically or taken in pill or supplement form. Applied topically, they are shown to shorten outbreaks of both oral and genital herpes. Taken daily in pill or supplement form, anti-virals can actually suppress the virus, decreasing the frequency of outbreaks. There are numerous prescription anti-virals on the market with this target for those who have severe or debilitating outbreaks. For individuals who prefer all-natural remedies, several mushroom varieties are proven to be powerful anti-virals as well, specifically maitaki, shitake and reishi mushrooms. Aloe vera has also been cited as a simple and cheap topical anti-viral.

Over-the-Counter Balms

There are multiple brands of the over-the-counter chapsticks and balms that can be found in the aisles of your local pharmacy. These contain some combination of topical anti-viral, anesthetic, and sterilizing agent. Their primary purpose is often to relieve the pain and irritation of a cold sore. If you are interested in a product that actually shortens the time of outbreak, be sure to check for an anti-viral or herpes-fighting ingredient, such as Lysine or Docosanol.

Prevasure Supplement & Balm

In addition to pharmaceuticals, natural remedies are effective at treating and preventing herpes outbreaks. Prevasure is a herpes treatment supplement and balm combination with both immune-supporting and anti-viral properties. It contains vitamins and herbs that bolster your immune system to fight the virus on a daily basis. All-natural anti-viral ingredients reduce the intensity and duration of outbreaks when they do occur. Using a program such as Prevasure offers both immediate cold sore relief, as well as a long-term approach to living with herpes.

Whatever approach you choose to take, know that herpes does not have to interfere with your life. There are many ways to deal with the virus that considerably mitigate your symptoms and make living with herpes completely manageable!
